Google didn't cut it, so I'm asking the true experts here ;).

How many species of native python does Australia have?

We had a lecturer in last week who claimed 16, but I got more than that off the top of my head, and then less if I didn't count subspecies. I don't doubt him, but I was wondering how he got that number? What classifies a species, as opposed to a sub-species?

i think there are 20 not including subspecies (eg. olive and pilbara olive). how bout d'alberti's python??? i counted that one so 20 is the number

I got 18, beefed up a bit by google.

Liasis olivaceus – olive python
Liasis fuscus – water python
Anteresia maculosa - spotted
Antereisa Childreni - childrens
Anteresia Stimsoni - stimsons
Anteresia perthensis - pygmy
Aspidites ramsayi - woma
Aspidites melanocephalus – black headed
Morelia Spilota Cheynei – jungle carpet
Morelia Spilota Spilota –diamond
Morelia Spilota Bredlii – bredli (centralian carpet)
Morelia Spilota Mcdowelli –coastal carpet
Morelia Spilota Metcalfei – murray darling
Morelia Spilota Variegata – Proserpine carpet python
Morelia Spilota Imbricata – Southwest carpet python
Morelia Amethystina – Scrub python
Morelia Carinata - Rough scaled
Morelia Viridis – Green Tree Python

may have forgotten to look for 2 if there is meant to be 20?

3 more to go for a total of 21 (including all sub-species). Taken from Keeping and Breeding Australian Pythons.

Add to that list:

Antaresia stimsoni orientalis - Eastern Stimson's Python
Liasis olivaceus barroni - Pilbara Olive Python
Morelia oenpelliensis - Oenpelli Python

If I am not mistaken, M.s.variegata is the North-western Carpet Python or Darwin Carpet Python, and the "Proserpine" locality refers to M.s.mcdowelli.

If your strictly after species only then there are 14, all the carpet pythin complex (ex bredli) are sub species, and not recognised as full distinct species

Yeah i completely forgot oenpelli, well played on the other subspecies.

too true -i was just listing everything i could think of. the reason there are no subspecies of anything else is because i have not done much research into anything else.
