Does anyone know why the Morelia species ranges only go as far south as northern Victoria while venomous snakes can be found even in Tasmania?

    Thanks

    Hi LilithLeChat,

    Good question.

The range of the species is dependent on how the animal births young. Oviparous animals are limited to warmer ranges as the offspring develop in the egg and are more susceptible to cold temperatures. Once laid the mother cannot move the eggs. Ovoviviparous animals (which include the Tiger snakes in Tasmania) are able to inhabit colder climates as the offspring are developed internally. The mother is able to keep the offspring warmer by basking etc.

    Regards,
    Nick

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense.

Ovoviviparous animals have a shorter gestation periods. The young develop faster than oviparous animals and the mother is full of eggs for a shorter period.
