It's been donkeys years since I've been on here. Any way I have something intresing for all thos who breed your own feeder mice.

Have you ever had anything unexpected pop up suddenly out of a well established line?

I've seen it a few times in my own feeder lines. And it got me thinking. What else is out there?

In my original line from 2015 I have had abyssinians pop up *(non reproducible)

In my present blood line, unrelated to my original I have had tri colours pop up.
These are a work in progress.

I have also had recently a white belly cinnamon pop up but havent bred from him yet.

What weird stuff have you all seen in your feeder stock?

Were you able to breed it or was it s freak of nature one off fluke.

We get some with stumpy tails or no tails, 1 in 1000 I’d say

We have “fun side project” with 3 legged mice every 5-6 generations has 1 in the litter with 3 legs

Your stumpy / tail less ones would be manx. They are a staple of the fancy.
The tidier the bum the better.

It's a recessive gene. [emoji6]

Pictured is one of my manx.

That coat type is pretty cool, I never paid much attention to non standard coat types so I'm not sure if it's unique or rare. The tricolours are very cool! They're pretty much the holy grail of mice in Australia. Some of the mouse people would let you name any price for them as long as it wasn't money or anything valuable (because they don't have anything of value).

I had merle mice pop up in one of my colonies about 8 years ago. I posted pictures on the rat forum and the mouse people went bananas over them because apparently it was the first time merle mice had appeared in Australia. Amusingly they were so incredibly rude about it, so I didn't give them any. I said if they calmed down, were patient and politely asked I'd be happy to share them and they just continually angrily demanded them! When that wasn't successful they actually attempted to bully me into it! Haha! It was very funny having these weird young girls and crazy woman thinking they could intimidate me! I suppose they were just using the strategies which work on each other in that community. They were very puzzled when it didn't work. Very, very strange community they have over in the mouse world! It's sort of a shame, apparently no one had them turn up again. At least their angry tantrums were comical. I'm sure it happens in a lot of feed rodent colonies and usually they go unnoticed. It's certainly nowhere near 1% of the excitement of having a new snake mutation, but sort of cool. I had a couple of rat mutations pop up too, but nothing which would change the world. I selectively bred some pretty cool patterns with the rats too. Much easier with rats than snakes, and was a fun aspect to making food.
