Unexpected find

A mate and i went for a walk around the local duckpond and found this little guy. So my friend ran home and grabbed the camera. He just sat there and we took some pics then he slithered off. LOL (we didnt mess with it just took some pics, Dont flame me). Any ideas as to what it is>?
