Haha I looove being at uni! I've done a semester at the QLD college of art, one at UQ doing journalism/arts and now I'm doing applied science which I think i'll stick at, or maybe transfer into zoo, eco or vet. Applied isn't too hard but you do have to study agricultural science :(

unis also hold special festival days.

mine recently had conception day. wolfmother, blue juice, etc played and there was a large amount of looseness :p

before you know it the actual degree becomes second priority.

just noting that your thinking about this in year 11.. i just found it funny as i only decided uni until the last day i was able to make selections haha.

Just to touch on what DanTheMan said, im in the same boat as him. not sure what the grading system is like in Geelong but in NSW we get a UAI after year 12, its a grading system that shows what you would be able to get into once you decide to do uni.

Long story short, I got 30and under as my official UAI because I couldnt care less in my HSC, went overseas then came back and did a Bridging course called open foundation which took 4 months and got a UAI equivelency of 83, im now currently doing a Bach of Podiatry.

Point is what ever you want to do at uni make sure it is something that u love and also irt helps to know before you start wheather or not you can have an income out of it once you have finished.

good luck

Sweet thanks for that fritzi! Will look into that now. I've only completed half of the course, was going to be finishing it this summer semester, so it's not to late to change.
Is that what you're doing? That tafe thing?

yep i plan on entering applied science at either UQ or JCU in late 2010/early 2011 and then aim for the score that will upgrade me to vet science, but i need to talk about that more when i know what uni i will go to, or maybe even just call qtac.
so next year i will do maths b and chemistry through tafe (need them for vet sci) and pick up like computers or something easy to make up 5 subjects, im already doing english and biology this year. it will take a while to get there but it'll be worth it :p

Look into Deakin Uni's Wildlife and Conservation Biology degree. I've applied to do it next year.

dont worry there will DEFINETLY be a gap year ! time to get my head together for another 3 years :). That whole bar idea sounds realllly good aswell. Do you know what campus of deakin the wildlife and conservation biology degree is at?

hahaha not a bad idea jason L. But incase things fall through i think it will be worth it :D

but i guess my science degree will make me rich later on in life.................
Guess again.

Uni is a hard slog, but the best times of your life! These days it pays to drop out of school in year 10 and do a trade, or finish year 12 and do a trade.. THAT's how you make lots of money haha but yes, a uni education is an awesome idea.

As for zoology, I'm pretty sure at the uni I go to you do a Bachelor of Science and major in zoology .. don't think there is actually a "Bachelor of Zoology"

well something along those lines :D. But i know what you mean, see so many kids getting out of school last year and this year and now going off and making a fair haul only in their first year...makes you wonder

Not that easy to get a well paid job from a science (biology based) degree, unless your planning on doing honours and a PhD afterward. Have you considered Environmental science, seems to pay a lot better.

Im doing a bachleor of science at University of New South Wales which im doing a double major in zoology and gentics and ill do my honors on herpetology. I am also going to do a postgraduate degree in pyschology. Uni isnt really that hard and it helps out, but i would say do it cause you want to not cause you want to make money down the road..

are their any degrees specializing in herpetolgy or along those lines as im going to do my basic science degree and then look for a specializng course any heads up about this. btw im in grade 10 and very determined to do this.

Im not sure if any specialise in herpetology but various degrees offer subjects that are somewhat focused towards reptiles. its quite difficult to specialise in terms of coursework but the thing I found is that you can quickly link up with other students who are interested in the same things as you and you sort of specialise by yourself. well thats what happened for me anyway. By talking with other students and your lecturers you can do a general biology degree, major in zoology and then specialise in a particular area whether thats herps or mammals or even birds.
then of course you can do honours and thats essentially a year long study into something that you like and enjoy.

so in short, i dont think there is a specific degree specialising in herps but you can focus your studies into them by yourself.

coops

The only uni course I have seen that offers Herpetology is the Zoology degree at James Cook University.

Hi all,

I'm currently doing yr 11 at school and next year after i finish yr12 and VCE intend on going to uni to study animal science, zoology, or something along those lines. I was just wondering if anyone on here has a degree in this field and the courses/uni's etc you did/went you to get it.

cheers

I did 2 years of Animal Science at LaTrobe bundoora. It was the wrong choice. it was part of Ag Science, so it was all about farming (pigs/cows/sheep) and stuff.
It really pays to do your research.
I would steer more toward B.Sc. Biology (Zoology) for sure.

oh ok, interesting. I'm going to have a good look at deakins courses because theres a few close by, thanks for the heads up, and all of the info everyone. very helpfull

cheers,

Blake.
