hi all,
just a couple of pics on the progress of these guys. i posted a thread about them when i acquired them a year or so ago trying to find out the validity of the name. Best answer i could get was from the guys at Reptile City. They reckon they're just a more yellow form of eastern. I went to the gold coast recently and they are a lot different to what i saw there. As far as the pattern goes.

the little spots on their heads are awesome.

eastern water dragons found at Carnarvon gorge national park in queensland have yellow instead of the deep red found normally on the more coastal animals perhaps they are found in the western parts of their range ?

interesting i must have a western water dragon myself ;)

i thought the same thing:D

Water Dragons vary in colour and size from locale to locale.. but at the end of the day they are still Eastern Water Dragons.

There's P.l. howitti, the Gippsland Water Dragon in southern NSW and Victoria, everything else is P.l. lesueurii, the Eastern Water drgon.

They look like my gippies.
Do you have a male?
Does he have a yellow throat?

I have to agree. they look like Gippys

I have seen a massive variety of color and pigment in Water dragons....from the "average" looking ones to color forms I have yet to see be kept in private collections;)

jimbomma, I know the animals you are talking about. From what I understand the original stock were from animals sourced from the feral Adelaide Hills population (on the River Torrens) and sold as the creatively named 'Western Water Dragons'. They are Eastern Water Dragons genetically, from their western most neo-distribution.

I was told my male was a so called "western",, either way he is awesome, heres a pic,, pity about his snout, but thats all healed up now, should get a up to date shot

WOW:shock: That is one awesome looking Water Dragon. So distinct. Very similar colouration and patterns but yours is just in a class os it's own. Be proud of him.
How old is he?

i had no idea there were any in SA.
I was told they were from a wild caught pair (licenced).

cheers for the info:D

Definately Gippies, their head shape is wrong for Easterns.
They have the Gippy long, slender head.
Here is a couple of pics of my pair, for comparison.
I think the ad you are referring to was on The Herp Shop, showing a male with a yellow throat. It seems to me that the seller just made up a name to get more sales.
The name "Western water dragons" of any description doesn't appear in Coggers, only the Eastern & Gippsland rate a mention.
These are not from that person, but from another locale, here in Vic.
You will notice his rubbed nose also. It has healed now, caused from continually rubbing it around the enclosure. I find it odd how Gippies are prone to it more than Easterns.
Gippies are a lot more "hand tame" than Easterns though

Oh definately. It's like looking into the future. Same tail patterns and all. Ha ha. Incredible. Been researching the wrong species for one and a half years. Although it's taken this long to get a straight answer.

And correct on place of purchase

Cheers :D:D
