hi im just wondering what kind of a bill a heat matt would generate for a snake and if it is possible to not need a thermostat for a heat matt or is it completely necasary for a thermostat aswell? as i see some of these apparent snake starter kits getting around at pet shops that have these heat matts but no themostat and say all you need is the snake to put in there and thats it...?

It depends on the wattage of the mat as to how much energy it uses. You don't need a thermo if you get the right wattage but it would be strongly recommended in case of problems with the mat

I'd highly recommend getting a thermostat no matter what wattage.

7ltr click clack I have a 7watt heatmat. Im guessing you have a hatchie.,......Reptapet have a heatmat with built in thermostat.

Heat mats work on resistance
More resistance = more heat
Only needs a slight change to increase resistance and start cooking instead of heating
Simply moving the cord can do it

Thats why you need a thermostat

You actually do get electricity from a heat mat when they get old and crack a bit
Thats when they usually catch fire
240v at 20watts can hurt

no i have no snake yet i am just getting the information before doing so lol

so a power bill isnt going to shoot up by adding 1 heat matt to it?

Correct^^
its just like switching on a desk lamp
Not much power usage at all

i only use a thermo on my incubator.. no thermo's used on any of my heatmatts/cords.. but i wouldnt recomend this to a newbie.. you must know what your doing...

ok well i am thinking of getting possibly a spotted, stimmy or childrens if i can manage to find one that isnt to bitey im not a fan of huge snakes this is why i have chosen these species

wattage x hours Ă· 1000 x price per kWh = cost of electricity.

so get your last electrity bill out and work it out.

assuming I got my math right, it costs me 34 cents a week for my 12w heatmatt with my electricity cost at $0.1735 p/kWh

Chase.

also at full size what is the biggest prey tem that any of those species is likely to take?

I wish I could get my power for 17 cents per kilowatt hour.

While I do not use thermostats with my heat mats, I can see you point but why are thermostats thought of as some kind of "fool proof safety device". They can and do fail and I can safely say that over the years I have had a lot more thermostats fail than heat mats.

Everything can fail, your car can fail, your brain can fail, light bulbs fail... everything 'can' fail...

I'm getting two new jungles sometime in the next 2 weeks and have set up 2 7ltr clickity clacks and am looking at a 20-30W mat and place them both on it, and use the 1 thermostat to run them, wasn't sure a 7W matt could get tempts to 35degrees or not...

I know my 9mtr 80W heat cord can get to 70+ Degrees with tiles!

Why are you getting a snake if your not that keen on them?? And I would use a cable instead of a heat mat.

He isn't a fan of 'Huge' snakes, so I assume he likes snakes, but is dubious of caring for a large one due to inherent possible dangers.

thanks veenarm you where correct in your assumption i am not a fan of huge snake i still like and respect them but with my life style it is not practical none of my friends nor family members like snakes if i where to pull out a 8 foot python to hold one day and for some reason it decided to give my neck a nice hug then there would be nothing i could do as noon would help me as they are all petrified of snakes big or small and i also have a small child to worry about that is my reason for not wanting a large snake
