If the snake was on your license, you probably could have had your ex charged for stealing ? Was he licensed to keep it ?
In my opinion, microchipping could help prove ownership if your snake was ever stolen. My vet , who keeps diamond pythons himself, quoted about $60 per snake. Up to you i guess. Good luck.
