Is anyone else noticing a singificant increase in herp feed pricing?

12months is fine imo, aslong as you keep everything sealed in their bags. I wouldn’t have that much stock for 12months, but I’d probably start chucking stuff after that

Thanks. That gives me an idea of what I can look for when it comes to bulk purchasing. Sounds like 9 months orders would be ideal if I can pull that off.

Or....I could take another approach. I wonder if I can get away with going to my wife and saying...

"Hey sweetheart - feed is getting expensive. I can save us a lot money buy buying in bulk. The only problem is the quantity of order to buy in bulk. Even though it's cheaper I wouldn't want any to go to waste. If we buy a second herp - then it will save us money by allowing me to buy in bulk, and be able to use all the food up before their use by date". ;)

If i was going to freeze anything for longer than a month or two i'd use my vac pack to seal it in a couple month batches. A sunbeam or similar will end up getting used all the time, they are a great invention.

Weaner rats - cost me $12.60 per rat the last lot that I purchased. The next size up was around $20/rat.

I live in a regional area, so not many choices on where to buy. Just wondering if this is only a local thing, or if others are seeing prices increase substantially. The local pet shop was really apologetic. Apparently they switched supplier because their old one was even more expensive.

I don't have much free time but I am beginning to wonder how involved it is to start breeding my own. Seems like a lot of work just for one herp though. (And don't tell me to get another one - misses is not going to allow that) ;)
Yes disgusting $50 Aussie dollars for 7 adult mice 🤬 robbery

It's worth asking local people who keep large amounts of snakes where they get theirs from.

I know that the pet shops around here get their mice and rats from a guy who's just two blocks from me and they charge nearly triple what he does. All his rat's and mice are currently $12 a bag, depends on size how many are in a bag. $25-30 a bag last time i was in a pet shop.

My little guy is on weaner rats too. They are $12 for 5 weaners. Truly, at $12 each i would just breed my own. The big fellas are on large and there are 2 to a bag.

I do the same thing - buy my rats from my local Reptile specialty shop and the pricing is at least 50% (he charges $18 for 5 Weaner Rats) cheaper than other Pet Stores in the area.

If you're ever in the Penrith NSW Area, reach out to Ian @ Sydney Reptiles; he's out of stock of a lot of his larger sizes at the moment but the pricing and quality are top-tier.

It must be hard for people in regional areas, especially people with only 1 or 2 snakes. The prices are astronomical. People in suburban areas can search around for better prices.
But there are people who can deliver rodents in freezer bags to far flung places if you need a few rats

Thanks DL. That's what I'm looking into at the moment. The trick is to order enough that the additional freight brings the order to a reasonable price again, but also making sure I have enough freezer storage to cover what would be ordered. (And hope like crazy we don't lose power and take out hundreds of dollars of produce in a single blackout). ;) Oh - and to also make sure the sizing is right. Last thing I need is a bunch of rodents too large or small. ;)

But at this stage that is what I'm leaning towards, and will probably lean to err on too small than too large, as then at least they can still be used.

smaller is the better option, I keep my freezer full of magic bricks in case the power goes off

I was one getting extra large rat for my boy before he died for $15.50.

Spoke to Mark here today when i bought a few bags of rats. He says if anyone is interested in doing a bulk buy he's keen.
He is at Woolgoolga tween Coffs Harbour and Grafton NSW.

He's not so keen on freighting, but Brisbane is only 4 hours drive and Sydney 5 if a few people wanted to get together and organize a bulk purchase and road trip.

Beautiful place here on the beach for a weekend away.

EX large is $6 each he was telling me today, same price as large as he's overstocked. My guys are on large and weaners.
