im looking to get my first snake but i cant decide what kind i want. i was looking at things like spotted and pygmy pythons as well as common tree snakes. what are your suggestions? nothing that gets to big. and also im new to this forum :)

Hi Snakegirlie,

Welcome to this forum.
I would suggest ether a Childrens Python or a Stimsons Python.
They are both great pet snakes. :D

Sorry I forgot to mention both of these snakes only grow to about a metre in length

Welcome to the forum snakegirlie
i guess it depends on what you call big and how much you want to spend, I bought a wheatbelt stimson which I love, I like the wheatbelt colours and they only grow to about 1m, my next one will deffinatly be an albino darwin but they grow to about 2m and are pretty expensive, I've heard a lot of recommendations with woma's and bredli tho there both reasonably priced with great colours but once again the bredlis can grow pretty big

yes i knew childs pythons and all the ones in the same family dont get much over 1m its just deciding which one i want and what colour morph lol how big do woma pythons get ?

Welcome to the forum Snakegirlie.
I'm a newbie here myself lol.
I would highly recommend you getting a hatchling for a first snake.
My son got a yearling childrens last year. I must say, that he did get lucky, with her being an extremely calm and easy going girl.
I got myself two hatchling childrens earlier this year.
After adopting snakes of different ages, I will only consider hatchlings in the future.
Also, this forum has been more educational than anything on the internet or encyclopaedia. There are a lot of very experienced and very helpful people on here.

Good luck, and have fun

Hi,

Its hard to say because different localities have different sizes but you said you want something small so I would highly suggest you get a Tanami Woma because they only get about 1.5m.

woma is a bit too big as we have a small dog so will be sticking with any Antaresia or common green tree snake :)

Tree snakes are not good beginner snakes at all, stick to Antaresia and you'll be happy.

I got a Stimson as my first snake last Friday very happy with it, it's a Alice springs local

she is a mini foxie only about 2.5-3 kg

I would suspect most species under 2.5m would leave you dog alone if it escaped from its enclosure. I wouldnt be socialising a dog and a snake together in the first place but given an escape you will be fine with most species bar coastal (10+years), olive or a scrub.

Most 2-3m coastal are on xxl rats (400-600g i would suspect). Im sure a keeper of these bigger species could give you a better answer then what i have but im certain you wont have a problem with your 2.5-3kg with anything under 3m.

Rogue5861 ok cool thanks for your advice :)

anyone else who can back up that a woma wont eat my mini foxie?

Just don't put your dog in a position where it would be anywhere near your snake whilst it's out of its enclosure and it will be fine.
