I had a PM recently from a new member asking me what some terms were. I guess they were to embarassed to ask publically. Now, I know what you are thinking. Why me? Yes, I thought the same. BUt anyway, how about we make up a glossary of terms & abbreviations that people can read so that they understand all of our jibberings.

Even a very simple example was Moreliaman. He obviously has a great knowledge of pythons but still needed prompting on what a GTP was. I know that to me it is a $70,000 falcon!!!

The post could end up as one of those "Sticky" ones that is always easily accessible.

Some examples to start us off:

BHP - Black Headed Python
GTP - Green Tree Python
Accies - Varanus Acantherus (sp), Ridge Tailed Monitor (is this right?)
Vitticeps - Central Bearded Dragons (we can't expect people to know scientific names)
Barbata - Eastern Bearded Dragon
Mac - Anterisia Macolusa (sp) Spotted Python formerley Liasis Childreni

If there are any people who would like to see this post please let us know here.

If there is anything you would like added please PM me.

If you would like to contribute then merely add to this post.

Cheers

confused.

Lacie: Lace monitor.

Bells: Bells phase lace monitor (particular colour form with much wider and bolder banding than normal ones))

Some others I have seen on this site:

GTS: Green tree snake
BTS: Brown tree snake
MD: Murray Darling Python

Thanks to xome very helpful member we now stand at a list of about 38 items.

Species nicknames: BHP, GTP, Mac, Lacie, Bells, Vitties, Vitticeps, Barbata, Beardie, EWD, Coastal, GTS, BTS, Night Tiger, MD, Bredli, ELN

Other Terms: Terrestial, ARboreal, Intergrade, Hybrid, ARP, Hypo, Hyper, GRavid, URS, Pinkie, fuzzy, Nocturnal, Diurnal, Femoral Pore, Preanal Pore, Slug, Herp, Herper, Herping, SFR.

Should I add "WTF"?

Folks, I know that most of you know all of these answers and probably think that I am a big loser for doing this. The responses I have had are from people who have been in a position where they didn't know what these things mean. It is terrible when you try to become part of a group but you don't know their jargon. Surely giving a list like this will show that we actually WELCOME people into this forum and want them to learn as much as possible We are not like dog breeders. We dont keep all our knowledge to ourselves as a big secret so no-one can have what we have.

Keep senmding the ideas. this is going quite well I think.

Thats twice now Megz!!! this is spooky!!

nah you've probably just seen my ideas on the other sites and thought they were so great and decided to copy me :lol: :p :wink: :mrgreen: (are they enough smiley faces?)

hmmm what are some other terms.. well we could go into ones like
LOL = laugh out loud
IMO = in my opinion
BTW = by the way

bluies= blue tongue lizard
dragon = type of lizard... i've told people that i have dragons and they look at me like i'm crazy... untill i say that their a type of lizard and No they dont breath fire or fly :lol:
well thats all for now..
Megz

thats weird...well scrap the BTW one.. cos it just automatically changes

maybe add some like freshie, saltie and retic. Although they don't pop up much they do come up from time to time in the exotics section. And one a lot of people know all to well...

Broke = A financial situation suffered by a herper during the quest to save for that next valuble purchase. Most commonly seen in thoses with the urge to own more expensive specimens such as GTP's and RSP's. :lol:

Oh there's another one...
RSP - Rough Scaled Python

CB - Captive Bred
WC - Wild Caught
Het - Heterozygous
Hypo - Hypomelanistic
Hyper - Hypermelanistic

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't think Maccies have ever been known as Liasis Childreni? Known as childrens python yes but not as Childreni. When the "Childrens Pythons" were recognised as seperate sub-species they were split as Childreni, Maculosa and Stimsoni I believe but it wouldn't be the first time I have been wrong :)

Great sticky idea Pete.

How about "WTB" - wanted to buy

I've always wondered what does "SIIK" mean? I don't think it is the same as "SICK" in todays kidspeak. Stuffed if I know.
