What makes you say they don't make good pets? Turtles and snakes don't need or want cuddles either. Fish certainly don't and are very popular pets. Plenty of people keep native mammals as pets and love them. Sugar Gliders, a mammal native to Australia, are one of the most common and popular pets in Asia.
