I think everyone on APS should send PETPLAN an email urging them to offer reptile insurance. This same company insures reptiles in the UK but for some reason they don't yet offer it in Oz.

Australian site:
Petplan Insurance Australia

Uk Site:
Pet insurance from Petplan - Insuring pet cover and health care for your dog, cat and rabbit

After looking at the petplan site it now looks like they outsource the exotic animal insurance to a company by the name of EXOTIC DIRECT. I urge everyone to send Exotic Direct a email from there website asking about possibly bringing EXOTIC DIRECT to Australia.

Exotic Direct:
Exotic Direct - Insurance for Birds, Mammals and Reptiles

I think we need to take steps to prevent the financial loss that we incur we these things happen. Not much we can do about the sentimenetal value though.

I have started this thread in a attempt to get a show of hands of how many people on this site alone would be interested in reptile insurance.

I have just sent off an enquiry.
If they get enough interest, maybe we can get them to offer Reptile Insurance for the first time in Australia?

What are you insuring against? Theft, disease, escape, fertility, fire??

Shellfisch - That's the plan.

I would be happy with Theaft & Fire. Don't think we have much chance of getting insurance against disease.

When I was involved in live import and export of livestock,I used to insure animals against disease. Insurance is just a game of chance, assessing the odds of a claim and placing the bet (premium). I your horse comes in you get paid at the preagreed rate. If there is no claim your premium contributes to the next great insurance biulding. Look at the biggest buildings in town, they are usually owned by insurance companies built from their profits. Like any casino it is hard to beat the bank as they know the game better than you.
I would expect a premium of around 20% of the sum insured reduced depending upon the excess. That would mean if you went five years without a claim you would be behind or the insurance company would be ahead..
