No . Don't waste your money on one , or anything similar .

The gadget you mention is EXPENSIVE rebranded junk, then most electrical products that have Reptile One brand on them are rubbish

Fine print , spot 2:1 ==> at 2" from the target, the measured temperature will be the average over a spot 1" in diameter which is huge and means you'll find it very hard to get a useful measure the basking spot temperature unless you bring the mini-ir gadget a lot closer than 1" from the surface you wish to measure.

I use a gun that I bought via Ebay , mine has adjustable emissivity, and a spot 18:1 and runs off a 9V Duracell.

My advice : go to Ebay and find a noncontact IR thermometer and some digital thermometers like these :

even this one is going to be MUCH better than the Reptile One mini-IR

Specifications:

Temperature range: -50 ~ 330℃ (-58~626℉).

Accuracy: ±1.5% or ±1.5℃

Resolution: ±1% or ±1℃

Distance Spot Ratio: 12:1

Emissivity: 0.95 (fixed)

Resolution: 0.1℃/0.1℉

Red Laser Power: less than 0.5 MW
the laser is handy , you see where the gun is pointing more or less.

Check ebay and you'll quickly find versions with Distance Spot Ratios higher than 12:1 and with adjustable emissivities ( very handy as not all surfaces are same emissivity and this can cause up to a 20% error in the measurement indicated ).

and some of these :

Some of the auto accessory stores sell them too. I bought mine from Supercheap Auto for about $60. Works well and looks very similar to the yellow one shown in NLG's post above.
