Free Microchipping Day presented by Brisbane City Council

Dog and cat owners are invited to bring their four-legged friends along to
Brisbane City Council's Warra Animal Shelter at Bracken Ridge for a free
microchipping event on Saturday May 14, 2011.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said Council was committed to boosting Brisbane's
microchipped pet numbers because it meant lower euthanasia rates at Council
shelters and more impounded cats and dogs reunited with their owners.

"I am urging all Brisbane residents with cats or dogs that aren't microchipped
to take advantage of Council's free microchipping day on May 14," Cr Quirk said.

"Not only is it mandatory under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008
to microchip puppies and kittens and all cats and dogs which are sold or given
away, but it also gives pet owners peace of mind that they have the best chance
of being reunited with their pet if it is lost.

"Brisbane pet owners are already proving they take microchipping seriously, with
half of Brisbane's 95,000 registered dogs registered and more than half of the
16,500 registered cats already microchipped.

"The aim is to boost these numbers significantly so we can reduce the number of
unwanted or lost pets euthanased at animal shelters.

"Sadly, about 16 percent of dogs and 50 percent of cats in Council shelters are
put down each year.

"Throughout the year Council subsidises microchipping costs at an affordable $66
through authorised implanters who visit Council's two animal shelters on the
northside and southside, but here is an added incentive."

There will be two authorised implanters at the free event to microchip the pets,
and Council will analyse the success of the event with a view to including it in
Council's regular Animal Management Program.

Pet owners must ensure their cat or dog is registered with Brisbane City Council
prior to the animal being microchipped or alternatively you may register your
pet with Council on the day.

To register your animal prior to the event, visit one of Council's Regional
Business Centres or the Warra or Willawong Animal shelters or go online at
www.brisbane.qld.gov.au.

Please bring your cat in a cage and ensure your dog has a secure collar and is
controlled on a leash.

Note: Residents who owned their cats or dogs before 1 July 2009 are not obligated to microchip it under the Animal Management Act 2008.
