This little guy came out to say hello as we were working in the back shed. It has a black hood and a black band behind neck goes all the way round. Bright red body. It was about the thickness of a pencil and about 30 cm's long.

It was found in the shed under some tins in the rural area near Darwin.

Venemous or harmless?

im not exactly sure but it looks like maybe a juvinile eastern brown but sice your in darwin it can't be that so maybe some kind of crowned snake

still could be a juv brown like the western brown , not quiet sure as I never come across alot of NT snakes TAIPANS are about the only one i know that inhabit the top end as they do in QLD ...as far as being one of the crowned snakes again I am not sure ..hope someone can give you a %100 I.D of the snake do you still have it?

I just had alook at the elapid pics and what you seem to have is a naped snake not a western brown .....

yes i also did some research and it is indeed a naped snake and they are mildly venomous

Its an orange naped or moon snake, mildly venomous but harmless to people.

The locals call them a moon snake, and they are very common around Darwin
