"Enjoying, Travelling and Experiencing Herpetology First Hand"
Travelling back in time and looking at some of the early history of herpetology, meeting some of the old faces and travelling throughout Papua New Guinea, in particular the Fly River region and the snakes and freshwater turtles of this area.​

"Australian Freshwater Turtles"
Looking at the change in wild populations of Australian freshwater turtles over the past 50 years. Why are they declining? What are the causes? And much more.​

Born in Sydney in 1938 John has been nothing if not versatile. A natural athlete he excelled in a number of sports including swimming, boxing, athletics and three codes of football. He has played Rugby League for New South Wales and at the age of eighteen he represented Australia in the decathlon in the Melbourne Olympics.​

As well as attending to his snakes and showing them at the La Perouse Loop in Sydney, John has written a number of books on wildlife, led natural history expeditions to Papua New Guinea and has won recognition as one of Australia's most respected authorities on Australian turtles. He was awarded a medal of the Order of Australia in 1992.​

His mother, Essie Cann (Bradley) was a showground 'Cleopatra', his father George Snr. was curator of reptiles at Taronga Zoo and brother George Jnr. was involved with the showgrounds and the weekly 'snake pit' at La Perouse.​

Few Australian herps can be credited as having been there from the start but John (and the Cann family) have over a century of historical relationship with herpetology​
