I have been curious about the same questions and have been doing a fair bit of reading this morning. Do lots of research. I think some other useful research steps would be to visit a breeder pet shop, perhaps handle the subspecies you’re interested in, ask questions, ask the same questions at a few different stores or breeders, but also see how you feel when you see and handle the snake. I’ve been also reading that a regularly handled - on top of a happy and healthy snake whose needs are being met - goes a long way toward a snake that is calm when being held.
I had a Jungle Carpet Python. He was a little nippy, but he was a good boy. A very curious boy when I handled him and I think I was lucky with his temperament. He really only struck when someone (not me) quickly stuck their hand in over him or in front of him and he felt threatened.
At the moment, I’m looking at Diamond pythons because I’ve heard they’re quite docile in nature. Also I live in Victoria and I believe they’re from eastern NSW down to eastern parts of Victoria.
Anyway, I’ll be interested in what you decide to do!
