A rabbit-eating "monster" python weighing in at 181kg has been captured by US authorities amid fears it would continue to escape its backyard enclosure.

Delilah — a pet Burmese python at least 16 years old and 5.4m in length — was taken from its Florida home to a person licensed to care for reptiles.

"To me it's a Goliath ... it's a monster of a snake," Florida Fish and Wildlife investigator Rick Brown was quoted in The Miami Herald as saying.

Mr Brown said it was the biggest snake he had ever seen.

Delilah was being cared for by its owner's brother, Melvin Cheever.

Mr Cheever said his brother recently moved to West Virginia and left the snake behind.

"I fed her this morning — gave her seven rabbits," Mr Cheever said.

"She is as docile as can be ... she's as happy as can be."

Charlene Boush, who lives in the home where Delilah was living, said she was constantly worried about her two dogs.

"She got out just last week ... they had to put her back in," Ms Boush said.

"I don't let them go back there at all."

Florida lawmakers recently introduced stricter laws for snake-owners after a two-year-old girl was crushed to death by a python which snuck into her crib
