I had my HP now for 6 years - still runs like a charm and I'm thinking about getting a new one, so I customized one in the HP shop - and as my needs to a laptop are very simlilar to yours, I'm sharing my settings:
Click me

High performance, no useless extras - and less than a grand.

Graphic ram is dedicated, so will run pretty much any game you wanna play on it and also for photoshop etc, will do a more than just a fine job.

The last laptop i purchased was a hot pink Vaio.awesum machine, dedicated to nothing but WOW playing.don't know anything about them size wise.....blah blah.....but it is never slow to load,or access the internet.pic quality in HD,surround stereo sound(?) and it was hot pink.i loved that thing until the hubby took it over for his WOW playing.

Macs used to be "Great" when they had their own componentry, however these days it is all Intel based. The only thing you are paying for is a different Operating System and an Apple Logo. Macs had their place a few years ago and now they are just very overpriced. You can get away with alot more for alot less with a PC.

Also, you can play any game on a mac as long as you have windows booted (another reason why you wouldn't bother having a mac if it is just like a PC anyways).

I have used Macs also and since I have experience with both platforms, I prefer PC anyday. But it all depends how much you want to pay for a logo ;)

I wouldn't load windows onto a mac and run dual OS's... I know people do it, my uni does it. But I don't particularly like it. You can load snow leopard onto a PC, too.

Macs do have their place, I know the componentry is intel based, I'm pretty sure they use the intel i7 in some of their computers, along with the dual core and quad core processors intel has. But every program that macs run just work. I can't lock a mac up no matter how hard I try. My GF has a 2008 macbook pro and it's quick as anything and just keeps running. I've tried to get it to freeze, can't. Can't say that for my PC.

a Apple rarely crashes (compared to a Windows PC, a Apple crashes once every 6 months, maybe?)

a Apple works right out of the box

a Apple doesn't have the same driver compatibility of Windows systems

a Apple handle system processes FAR better than Windows

a Apple is easy to learn and it's more user friendly

a Apple doesn't get virus's and malware like PC's

a Apple is far superior with multimedia

etc,etc

An Apple is the symbol of gay pride

A PC operator usually uses the word 'an' prior to the next word starting with a vowel - especially words like Apple.

A PC doesn't have compatibility issues - if it wasn't made for the PC then it won't work.

A PC can handle system processes in exactly the same was as an Apple - considering both now contain identical system processors.

An Apple can run Windows.

An Apple tells you what to do - so for the mindless masses that like shiny things it works well. A PC on the other hand requires competence.

PCs don't get viruses if by chance you use decent anti-virus software. Macs just don't show the unlimited amounts of viruses that they get so that the user of a Mac doesn't freak out - remember, Macs tell you what to do.

PCs with today's multimedia cards outdo Macs in almost every aspect - just ask my PC to do what a Mac does - not only does it do it faster, it does it better because I told it what to do.

Oh, and the specs on my Alien are fairly superior to a Mac, but yet, for some reason about $800 cheaper??? Go figure???

"a Apple handle system processes FAR better than Windows".

No.

"a Apple is far superior with multimedia"

No. I think you'll find most professional software covers both operating systems, even going over on to unix for server farm usage.

"a Apple is easy to learn and it's more user friendly"

Yet OS X sucks if you're a power user. Try using Macs in a corporate environment and see how limited they are. Yes, they are unix / FreeBSD based, but far from being open source.

If you're going to get a PC, better off going for a business model, IMO.

Oh, and the reason Mac "don't get viruses" (another myth) is because virus, malware, etc coders target Windows because it's the far more prevalent operating system.
This says nothing about Macs or OS X.

And as noted, the underlying architecture is the same.
It's pointless comparing actual machines against one another when it's the software that differs.
Besides, I've been running Windows 7 since the RTM was released and never had a problem with it.

I can totally understand that Macs have their place and they do work when needed and PCs require a little more "care" but I was more pointing out value for money. I would rather restart a machine a few times in a few months than pay $2000 more than i needed to :p

Acer or Asus if you ask me.. Dell pcs are fine but their s upport is rubbish.. Never had any problems with any of them

... okay guys, I think I get the point, some are for the Apple Mac's, some aren't. I only like them because their screens are nice & clear & they run quick.
But, in saying that, a lot of the new computers my mates have run exactly the same speed and have clear, if not clearer, screens.

I will most likely be going for the Asus (the first link)
Tikanderogahttp://www.aussiepythons.com/forum/member/tikanderoga-2714/ - Thanks for sharing that with me :) I like the look of it, but a few family members/friends have had some issues with HP in the past, so I'm steering away from them. Thank you anyways.

If anyone else has any ideas, I'd like to hear them. but please don't argue about the macs. in the end, they're just glorified PCs ... They look pretty, do exactly the same stuff, just for double the price.

Thanks again for your help guys xD

A computer responds to how you treat it. Obviously, you've treated your Windows based systems like a $2 hooker in the past.

a Apple works right out of the box

So does my little EeePC by Asus. The only change I made was to install XP, because that's the OS I prefer on my laptops. I can also buy/install more RAM and a larger HD in mine.

a Apple doesn't have the same driver compatibility of Windows systems

...obviously?

a Apple handle system processes FAR better than Windows

Propaganda for the uneducated masses spreads far and wide I see...

a Apple is easy to learn and it's more user friendly

You mean idiot friendly. There's nothing difficult about XP unless you're brain dead.

a Apple doesn't get virus's and malware like PC's

[Instert comment about being too immature to look at porn without giggling.]

a Apple is far superior with multimedia

Correction, USED to be far superior. Now they're exactly the same as any other laptop there.

etc,etc

Lol'd. Thanks for the read though. Also, please use "an" in the future. It made me rage.

http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts.aspx?qryPart=12378 - I'd get it if it were for every day use.
