I'm 16 and ready to do my first rescue.
the long break is coming up and I'm interested in taking care of a baby possum, bird, magpie, (most mammals) or injured reptile I would like to work with animals that can be released into the wild as I would find the most enjoyment in seeing it released.
Where would be the best place to go.
Im located south Brisbane.
cheers liam

No I don't is it a long process? I wouldn't mind getting one

If u can find a local wildlife carer (probably try google), they can fill u in on the details on how to get one etc and answer any questions u might have.
Good luck, i hope u can acheive what ur after, we need as many wildlife carers as we can get. :)

i think it should be a government funded job and have a proper rehabilitation clinic that the carers can use its rediculas that they expect it to come out of our pockets

Iv contacted BARN - Brisbane animal rescue network Now I'm waiting for there reply :)

Sorry, i'm not mcuh help as I have no idea on Qld laws etc.
Just wanted to say good on you. We need more people like you. My kinda career path too but in Vic a 14 yr old can't do much. sucks.
Anyway, good on ya and hope it all goes well.

You gotta pay magic money to do those sorts of things. Without paying some shiny pants jerk you can't save animals ;) Just also remember, after all the red tape and bullcrap that goes with earning that privilege, they provide you with ZERO insurance! Whooooo!! :) :D

its stupid hey you can just leave it there to die (like most people) or take it home raise it release it and you break the law unless you pay the money and get the licences i dont understand

I am a member of wires first you have to do a rescues and immediate care course, that will allow you to rescue animals and hold them for three days only until it can be passed to a specialized cater. To become a carer you then do specialized courses for the animals you wish to care for eg. You want to care for birds you do the birds beyond basics course, if you want to catch and relocate reptiles and care for injured ones you have to to the wires reptile course and so on with macropods and possums and raptors sometimes rehabilitating an animal can cost heaps wires also helps with this. You don't need to get a licence as you operate under theirs

i was looking in to doing a rescue course with WIRES so i could rescue and care for injured, sick or orphaned animals/ reptiles. you need to pay to do a course with them and then you start as a basic e.g. caring for baby birds ect if you want to care for other animals you must pay more money to do specialist courses in each catogory you want e.g reptiles, birds of prey, mamals ect. and must be 18 plus and have a licence.

why do they want to make it such a hard thing to do it really discourages new people from wanting to do it. the government should support it and pay for the courses. centerlink pays for the unemployed to do these business courses and everyone gets a new free laptop. (which most just put in the hock shop).

i dont see what the difference is why not let anyone do it if the animal dies it was going to die anyway if you hadn't of done anything. i took a baby possum to the vet its eyes were still shut no fur they said theres nothing they can do because its soo young and it will die anyway they didnt want to put in the effort. so i took it home for a week i had it set up one of my small snake enclosures with heat and moisture and a towel i woke up every 3 hours to check and feed finally its eyes opened then i took it back to the vets and they called the career to do the rest but they couldn't believe it survived.

i don't have the money to do the courses but its not too much different from hand raising a kitten from birth. why dont you need a course to do that? or have a course to have and raise children? i think its all a joke

wires also advises against reptile owners caring for sick reptiles due to the quarantine risks. you also need sufficient means of housing the animals/reptiles and they are to be inspected and approved prior to first use I believe.
After the initial hassles I think it would be pretty satisfying.

And good on you for having a go Liamb.

Go to the scale and tails reptile festival in Ipswich today and you can talk to a Wild Care Carer and they will point you in the right direction.
