Looking for advice on the correct placement of vents.

I always thought correct placement was 'high' on the warm side, and low on the cool side to promote natural thermal ventilation of the cabinet space - as warm air rises, it is replaced by cool air down low thus creating a natural flow of ventilation. I have seen examples where the opposite has been done.

Can anybody advise the correct locations and the theory behind it?

I think it depends on your climate. In hotter climates you want to evacuate the heat quicker leaving the vent higher on the hot side and in colder climates that require more heat retention you should place the hot vent lower. Convection simply will not work unless the outside air is cooler than the inside.

That's just my experience. You could try heating it with no vents and see what problems you have, I've learnt trial and error are the only way to get the heating right on custom enclosures, once you have done a few you get a better idea.
