such a shame! they are lovely little critters
 
yeah its sad but i think if they get the waterways they are native to back to good health there is plenty in holding tanks around Mexico city there is a population in an old Olympic lake.
 
I seen a doco 3 or 4 years ago where they caught them in the lake, fair enough.
Well, I highly doubt they are a species to totally disappear in captivity and id assume the captive genetics would be decent.
 
Might of been same one I watched they couldn't find them in their native habitat and they had a breeding program and they released some back into the wild
 
There are tens of millions of them in the world of research and the pet trade so I would expect the population could be re-established without too much trouble if the environmental conditions were right. They are banned in the NT because they would do so well here if they got into our Wetlands.
