Incredible moment hungry carpet python devours a mother possum – but there's a heartwarming twist to the gruesome footage
This is the incredible moment a carpet python devours a writhing possum whole.
The footage, filmed in the backyard of a Brisbane home, shows the sizable python slowly swallowing the brushtail possum in the middle of the night.
Catcher Janne Torkkola, of Snake Out Brisbane, said the meal would likely keep the python satisfied for 'quite some time'.
The footage shows (pictured) a carpet python devouring a mother brushtail possum at a home in Forest Lake, Queensland
In a heartwarming twist to the gruesome footage, the homeowner revealed the possum had desperately released her baby from her pouch before dying.
The homeowner quickly took the baby possum, who was spared, and rushed him to an emergency vet, 7 News reports.
Mr Torkkola said it wasn't uncommon to see pythons eating possums this time of the year.
'In summer and spring, possums are more active and on the move more. In the warmer seasons there’s going to be more activity,' he told the publication.
'Carpet pythons are mostly rodent predators, but as they get bigger they tend to eat possums and fruit bats.'
Last week, a video (pictured) of another possum being devoured by a python in a Brisbane shed went viral on Facebook
