Hi, I'm kind of new to reptiles and would like to buy a bearded dragon or a blue toungue. Are they good lizards to start off with? Could someone plz tell me what other reptiles make good pets especially that don't mind being handled? I'd also like to know what I need for them and how much it would cost.

Thanks

hey buddy i just got my first lizard i got a beardie(chopper)
hes awesome just make sure you get there enclosure set up right lights and heating youll be right heaps of helpfull people on here

Beardies and Blue Tongues are pretty much 'the' 1st time lizards, as long as you treat them right they are good handlers and very hardy so they are somewhat toleratable to mistakes while you're learning.

getting the enclosure and things for them are expensive aren't they? I have just finishedsetting up a tropical fish tank and that wasn't cheap either. Got any money/time saving tips???

anything on class one is regarded as easy to keep but id go for a beardie they have very easy to keep and breed have great personality's and don't mind being handled

my bluey was my first rep and has never shown any sort of aggression. very tame and you can do anything with him.

beardies are awesome 1st (2nd third and fourth) lizards, i just cant get enough of them.

the best money saving tip i can give u is to buy 400 adult roaches from herpshop and start breeding, little ones eat a bucket load of insects and i find thats the most expensive part. if you dont wanna breed ur own, buy in bulk, little tubs from the petshops are expensive and they can easily eat a tub a day (not to mention that petshops run out and ur left without food till their next order gets in)

Buy ur products (and insects in bulk) online and check out ebay or the trading post for cheap second hand tanks.

dont 'save' money by not providing the correct heat and UVB lights, cos that'll end up costing u more in vet bills.

Get a good book on the type of species you are more fond of........do alot of reading!

Find someone...maybe from this forum (hopefully lives near you)that has the type you are interested in that will walk you through the ins & outs ........that way you get a hands on visual of whats its all about...& the type of personalities you will be dealing with.

Yes ditto....buy in bulk first for live feed...for long term its cheaper & healthier for your future adoptee!

I found Pogona Vitticeps...Inland/Central Bearded Dragons unpassable.......& variation of colour is quite incredible.

what ever lizard you get make sure you ask your breeder
any questions you have on the do s and don't s on the lizard
and if you chose to get bearded dragons it would help if you
got a book called 'the bearded dragon manual' so you know what
sort of bearded dragon to get and how to chose a healthy baby
but i got beardies so i would get one of them

i got blueys for my first reps and there really messy i'd reacon beardies are the best to start with

There are plenty of people from each state that sell from this forum..........have a look at the sellers here
awesome beardies & the breeders are too eager to help with any advice....like Saz,MissB,Zulu....just to name a few!

Get yourself a beardie , they are the best pets and make for a great attraction for your house, they are so friendly and gentle...

Beardies are awesome creatures but with the number of herp help threads started in relation to beardies i don't recommend them as a first lizard. Not all but alot of newbies stuff it up with beardies. I find Ridge Tailed monitors are better. They have just as much charactor, need UV just like beardies, eat similar foods but it doesnt matter if you cook them, the hotter the better. I think ackies are a better first lizard. Just my 2 cents.

Simone.

I've got two beardies and i'm pretty happy with them as my first reptiles. I started them in a two foot tank for about 9 months, just not long ago moved them to a 4 foot tank. Seems they are happy enough. A stick and rock or something to climb up to the heat, maybe something with water in it. Good luck with it, they are good fun. Also frequent handling while young so they are better behaved when they get older. See ya.

i want one so bad. Would a plastic storage tub be ok till I can get a better tank? All my other tanks have fish in them :( . What do the uv lights and heat lamps cost? It's going to be so good to get a pet I can actually hold. lol

My first was a beardie, never have had a problem. GET A BEARDIE!!!
