How do you identify timewasters?
Here are a few observations.
They hide their number when they call.
They do not want to pay the advertised price.
Their price is always closer to the market value. ( In their opinion.)
They know better than you what your animals are worth.
(Even though they haven't seen your animals)
They talk utter rubbish.
They leave you feeling that you know nothing about anything.

Please feel free to add your thoughts on these cretins.

Ooh! Ooh!
You give all details in the add (eg. price, sex, willing to freight etc), then email or PM various questions such as 'What sex is it?' or 'I know it says not willing to freight, but could you send it from Sydney to Melbourne?'.

What you think are time wasters can turn out to be a good sale sometimes tho.... I sold my hilux not long ago a guy from qld rang me private number was bit sketchy.... young guy.... and had most of those points you mentioned didnt think it would happen 3 days later he caught a plane and was flying my car home.... some people just go about things different....

There yet to check with their wife or spouse
They have run into money trouble
They lost their job or are in hospital

i had a bloke coming to pick a young jungle up, about 2 hours before he was suppost to pick it up his wife called and explained to me why he was'nt allowed to have one. very strange behavier.
nothing worse when you knock back other buyers for somone that is a no show.

I think the ettiquette of purchasing herps is more..... innocently misunderstood (rather than deliberate). I think you need to buy a few pythons before you learn how a sale is meant to be run.

From a newbie's perspective, you're always told to 'shop around' and 'that's too expensive - a guy in Vic was selling them for $200 less last week'.

As a first time buyer (years ago) I remember that I emailed 4 people asking about their jungles, but of course I only purchased from one of them. I guess I wasted the other peoples time, but I judged the seller by the response they gave me, how friendly they sounded, and how much info they gave me.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are those complete TOOLS that really do waste your time. I remember when I was about 19 and I moved into my first flat, and needed a fridge. There was a Harvey Norman and a Bing Lee right next to eachother, and they both had the same model fridge. About seven times I went back & forth, quoting the other stores 'best' price, and each time the other store reduced their price, until Harvey Norman said they couldn't beat Bing Lee's price. I've never done it since, but I can imagine how frustrating I must have been to those sales guys.

That being said, I would never dream of doing that to ANY herp breeder; they put a price on their hard work and effort, and who the hell am I to question that? If someone is too tight to pay what I think a herp is worth, then they can go buy a $50 cornsnake from Corio in Geelong.

I guess it just comes with the territory - sometimes it's easy to pick a time waster, and sometimes the person you think is a real time waster ends up buying 3 albino's from you.

Anyway, i'm sitting 2 metres away from the same fridge I bought 10 years ago, and my first jungle was an Atherton for $250, and he's still my fav.

regards,
Lockie

Q. Have you got pics?
A. Yes, they were in the ad.
Q. Yeah, but have you got them from other angles?
A. Sure, have 5 more.
Q. Thanks, but have you got others?

In ad: No idea of locality. Previous owner didn't know. No way to verify locale now.
Q. I really like that childrens/carpet/RBB/adder/whatever....what locale is it?
A. As said in ad, no idea.
Q. Can you ask the previous owner?
A. As also said in ad, previous owner doesn't know.
Q. Isn't there any way you can find out?
A. Are you kidding?

I wouldn't put the private number down as a telling point. Sometimes it's just plain smart to hide your number when calling people you don't know.

All points seem to be covered her but if you don't intend on making an arranged appointment, please let the person know!! Too many times I've spent waiting waiting waiting for people that don't show, it isn't any big deal/effort to make one call/sms is it?

Like anyone who has sold more than 10-20 reptiles, I have heard everything here, and a lot more  They are just a part of life, you just have to accept it and get on with things.

It never ceases to astound me though, just how many people seem to end up in hospital (often with potentially fatal conditions such as cancer etc) or losing their jobs just after agreeing to purchase a reptile! Making the decision to buy a reptile must be a truly dangerous move!

That is just another part of the game. I often tell people I won't be free for quite some time, not because I won't be around, but because I will only allow them to come over at a time when I am doing something which I don't mind being disturbed in the middle of, and will be happy continuing with for some time before and after the appointment, so if they don't turn up I won't care. I am often asked things like "So you won't be around for almost a week?", and I'll say I will be around, but not available. Most people can't understand  Perhaps I should just say I am going to be on holiday so I don't offend them. People will think I am incredibly wealthy, being able to afford to be on holiday about 340 days of each year

You just can't schedule people into a tight schedule, it won't work. It doesn't help to emphasise the importance of punctuality, etc etc, because it will take several hours to explain to most people, and the next tyre kicker will be no more educated than the last :p

The one I love is "Oh, I see you have some "@#$%?" for sale on the net, do you have anything else?" or even better when you just get a random text..

time wasters ,arent only in the buying/selling world of snakes..I get calls ,as I would think alot of other catchers do , asking to come and get a snake that they have seen at the bottom of the property near the dam about an hour ago or seen it go down a drain near their house and you know the neighbourhood kids like to play in their yards and the snake obviously wants to prey on these kids...or snake up a tree how high up I asked..about 18feet she said but its disturbing the birds ...

what sort of a bloke gets his wife to ring up and say "freddy's been a naughty boy and isnt allowed to buy any horrible snakies now"

I'd be too worried about my pythons living in such a dysfunctional household to sell that bloke anything

My tyre kickers / time wasters are really annoying as I actually have to do quotes for them , most custom quotes will take about 30-45 minutes by the time I'm done , plus the back and forth with emails etc .
I dont mind in most cases but , i get lots of young kids getting quotes with no means of paying for one and they do not bother to tell me that till after I have quoted .
Most people cant even reply with a ..... no thanks , your to expensive , maybe later , thanks for your time .......

I know what you mean dickyknee! Thats why I am giving mine away as my tyres have been dealt a beating.
Free jungles...............anyone! See for sale section.
