What the best and most humane way to kill a rodent for your snake?

co2 some one has a real good thread with pics on how to make one

What does bagging them up and putting them in the freezer (alive) do to them? Do they fall to sleep, like hibernate and just die in their sleep?

im no pro on the subject but i couldnt imagine it would be a comfortable death

No, they freeze to death.

Why not try cervical dislocation? With a bit of practice - newbies at work have to 'cull' 50 or more pre gassed mice to get the hang of it - it is quick and humane and free.

Gassing is also not recommended for pre weaner pups - velvets or before - something about the lung maturity, the CO2 takes much longer and its horrible to watch.

See, I thought been mammals, that their bodies would go in a state of hibernation and die in their sleep... anyone have proof that freezing is worse then suffocation or breaking their spine in two?

i was reading some where about all the killing methods good and bad and freezing wasn't even mentioned so i guess it must not work very well or must be totally inhumane

Thats the thing, no one ever mentions it... does anyone have the results of freezing?

Dependant on the size of the Rats, it can take up to an hour or so for them to eventually die, in the freezer...

Wouldnt be good for them.... Definately not Humane..

you can make your own CO2 using bicarb soda and vinegar, its a little messy tho

i knew of someone who used to hold em under water, said it only takes a couple o seconds cos of their tiny lungs..but it didnt sound to humane to me...

Grab rat by the tail.
Swing in a circular motion [ so that you can build up a fair bit of speed ]
Then in a down ward motion, slamming his/her head onto a brick placed on the floor.
Dead within seconds.

I like, i like.... but then there's the blood and the dead rat with a weird flat head

Sorry but I had to laugh at the title of this thread.......killing live rats.....ummm, you couldn't really kill dead ones !!! I guess I just have a warped sense of humour !!

As they say on CSI , you get the first hit for free . You only get splatter if you have to do it more than once . l have a corner of the shed that works well , one quick swing and drop em in the bucket .

HAHA! I too, thought something sounded odd about the title!

Anyway, I know of someone who breeds rats, he said freezing wasn't terrific, he would find them later, some dead, others not, huddled together :( ....so he stopped doing it that way. He uses CO2 now.

Rats are warm blooded so wouldn't it be the same as putting a human in the freezer to die?
