G'day guys,

Not sure if this has been posted, but it's absolutely disgraceful. The people themselves probably have no knowledge of the damage they are doing.

It's amazing the contrast between Australia and some other nations - you can not walk on a beach during nesting season in some areas in Australia, and over there they harvest all the eggs!

Anyway, the photo's speak for themselves.

That is so saddening...... it has reduced me to tears :(

There is almost no nest that will go un noticed..............

How do they not understand that by harvesting them all they are leaving none for future harvests?

They are parasites....... disgraceful.......... the casual manner of the way they are harvesting actual makes me feel sick !!!! organised farming of animals I can live with...... but raping defenseless wild animals is just mindless.:evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil:

you are right, it is amazing the contrast between australia and other nations...

i think the republic of costa rica's track record environmentally (and peacefully) when compared with that of australia somewhat negates the activities of these individuals...

this absolutely makes me sick! these people are taking MILLIONS of lives from the turtle population, and for what, probably to eat as a 'delicasy' or some half-a** reason. this has got me sooo mad! im glad we live in a country that respects wildlife and not one that EATS EVERYTHING IN SIGHT! if i was ther right now i would....GRRRRRRR!

It is amazing what people will do for food in developing nations isn't it.

You can be pretty well guaranteed that none of those eggs will go to waste. We are lucky that we live in a country that has the money and infrastructure to protect animals such as turtles. Don't jusge these people until you know where they are coming from.

yer very good point waruikazi. guess i got a bit hot headed when i first saw it. now i see what you mean, they are only trying to feed there families. there governments arent doing enough to help the people. its a shame to see people having to go to those extents to eat.

Before everyone jumps on the soapbox lets not forget we hunted whales until 1978, we shoot 20 + million roos every year and no doubt there are many that find that unacceptable. Different cultures look at things in a different way BUT maybe look at this before jumping to too many conclusions. Costa Rica has an enviable conservation record.

Beat me to it Gordo... When you're desperately struggling to keep your head above the poverty line, animals are either tools, pests or food. Pets are a luxury only the 'rich' can afford.
But as Gordo said, not one of those eggs will go to waste; also, the pics look bad, but I wonder if you actually worked out the total number of eggs plundered as a percentage of the total number of eggs laid that night, whether it would be that much???.... Dunno... it looks bad, but we don't know all the facts.

Nic

Don't they only do it for a few days, and then they stop so the turtles can keep on laying eggs? Thats what i remember from watching a doco on it. They said it's not entirely bad because the eggs wouldv'e been dug up and smashed by more turtles, and some off the animals that like to eat the eggs are scared of by all the people.

That said i don't agree with it.

EDIT: Boas link is a good read, more professional than what i just said.

Thanks for the info, Ash. I received the email from a major Aussie zoo without any information, just the email title - "On the beaches of Costa Rica - short sighted or desperate?".

The power of the internet as a tool for learning has just been exposed! LOL!
Nic

No problem, that is the problem with these emails. It's just electronic Chinese whispers, the story keeps getting worse the longer it goes on. It's funny that it should have been titled 'short sighted' as it is in fact the exact opposite.

there down right evil......what gives them the right.......i hope mother nature gets revenge

Did the last 2 posters actually read this thread ? abosulty ? Also I think you will find that Aboriginals do in fact eat turtle eggs.
