awsome guzzo ive made a few throwing knives closely shaped to your last post with a few holes in the blade to balance them. but that was a ew years ago now you've inspired me again though might be something to do again.... have you concidered powdercoating them ?

is there a reason behind fileing them into shape or can you go ahead and use a grinder?

nice looking knives mate . A guy at work makes knives and he uses the old metal band saw blades , he said they have a really low amount of carbon like the old samuri swords . Might be worth checking out some metal work shops and ask them to keep there busted blades for you .

cheers nico

Absoloutly awesome, They look great!!. Ive just spent the last hour watching Youtube clips on the subject....There was one real standout .
Ive got about 8 hunting/pocket knives worth over $500. After seeing this...I dont think i will be buying anymore...Ill post pics of how I went. Once again awesome thread. Thanks, for introducing me to what could be my new hobby....other than herps.

mate, thats awesome, well done. I'd love to give it a go some day! just have way too many hobbies at the moment though lol

Great Mate,

It is something really to be proud of when you strap a knife you made yourself on your belt. I got offered $500 for my bowie (my first knife) but some things are not for sale. Actually I have never sold one despite being flattered with offers. I have had more joy from seeing the faces of the close freinds and family I have given them too rather than from the money. My son will get my bowie on his 21st birth day.

Old railway spikes are very good too......you would have to beat them out flat while the metal is red hot....I want to give this ago.

One more thing on old files....they used to be very prized and some blacksmiths would even leave a small amount of the files teeth on the blade to show it was made from a file.

Great times that have passed.....I would love to have talked to an old time blacksmith.
oh railway spikes are easy for me.. they've just upgraded the melbourne to sydney rail way and those spikes are everywhere

Nice work, I had a great uncle that use to make really nice knives out of old files.

I think you've now got everyone thinking about making there own knives. How long does it take for you to make one knife?

thats impressive, ive used knives my whole life being a butcher and know its hard to get a good quality knife that can hold a good edge
best i found was the swibo harder to get an edge on unlike most other knives but holds the edge much longer from personal experience,

where could i go to resource on making my own knives?

good work

that is some realy nice work there mate. i havn't made a real knife in about 5 years. too many hobbies to count now to do it. i still make the odd stainless prop from time to time but nothing forged in some years. i have been thinking of getting back into it as i would realy like to give pattern welded steel a go.

i do ike the little hunting knife you made. that has a realy nice flowing tip to it. great for getting under the flesh.

Wow! Thanks for all the feedback guys, I might even get my tools out and start a new one. I only threw this post on because I was a bit bored.......it has been about a year since I made my last knife. It takes me about 15hrs of work but a lot of that time is preparing the metal. If I could get 4ml flat spring steel without rust it would be a lot easier and quicker.

i collect knives but have never thought to make one! that is so fantastic, i love it!!!

Once you have made your first you almost never want to go back to buying them lol. It can be addictive and it is lots of hard work but the end result pays for itself in the end. If you are going to get into it do your research and if in doubt ask someone who knows.
