Hi all.
I'm going to get my first snake in the near future and really like the jaguar pythons. Are these snakes easy to look after and what sort of enclosure will best suit it?
Any help would be great.

Cheers

jojo

Do research on Morelia spilota spp. (Carpet pythons), Jags are a morph of Carpets.

No more difficult than any other morelia, just be sure you know the breeder well and you get one with no neurological problems and all should be good.

Jaguar Carpets aren't a good beginner snake. The majority of Jags have neurological problems, of which some can be quite severe.
Besides, there are much more interesting and beautiful carpets to choose from. Carpets will enjoy a tall cage when they are younger as they like to climb, however they are usually more terrestrial when they are older. Most Carpets will be in the 5-8 ft range when adult, so a 4x2x2 enclosure is perfect, an 2x2x2 cube or even a click clack with heat would be best for juvenile/hatchling carpets. There is a thread on here about how to set up a click clack. http://www.aussiepythons.com/forum/diy-zone-5392/guide-build-click-clack-dial-93266/
Do some more research, reading some of Dock Rock's articles for Southern Cross Reptiles is a good place to start.
Good luck :D

Not all JAGs have neuro issues and those that don't are no different to look after than any other carpet/jungle.
It is a personal choice as to what a person considers more interesting and beautiful, just because you may not like them, does not mean others don't think they are the best thing since sliced bread.
the click clack is great, but you don't need to cut a hole in the top for them mesh, not really needed.

Think you're over exaggerating there, sure the neuro problems exist but to say the majority of them have it isn't exactly accurate, and definitely not the majority having the severe symptoms.

Not doubting your knowledge, just interested as to what evidence you have to state that some or all jags do or do not show neuro problems?

Are you stating as how they are kept or just the line being bred?

Reading overseas keepers sites etc, some animals show no or little to no signs, while others can have varying degrees. Some show no signs at all for a period of time then suddenly do.

I'm not claiming to be an expert or a know it all, i'm just saying to say they ALL have problems isn't really accurate and the ones with the SEVERE problems are blatantly so obvious i doubt any respectable breeder would consider selling them.

Don't worry about the neuro with Jags, if you buy from a reptuable breeder then you should have no problems. The neuro issue is not as bad as some make out & onlly a small percentage of snakes can exhibit this neuro perfomance. But buy from a reputable breeder.
