hi guys
been helping out with some frog research thats been going on in dorrigo national park. the research has been taking out by a phd student from newcastle uni. the main frog that she has been researching is the most parculiar little thing. the hip pocket frog (Assa darlingtoni) lives in the leaf litter, the males call in groups and offtern in sync to attract the females, they then mate a few days latter the females lays the eggs in the leaf litter, the male stays with eggs (within 30cm or so) until the embryos from to tabpoles. then (this is the strange part) the tabpoles climb up the leg of the male and into his hip pockets, yes he actully has hip pockets they are small slits in either side just above the hind legs. the tabpoles then morph into juvi's climb out of the pockets and the cycle starts again. heres some pics of a few of the frogs we found.
