Help! cannister filter trauma

hi please help. am getting turtles, just setting everything up. got a second hand eheim cannister filter. once tank was filled, connected hoses to filter and turned on, no water flow just noises from the filter. not knowing much about it, and the fact there was no instructions, can someone help me to get it to work? does it have to be filled with water first? cheers

the filter will need to be primed first. if you put the inlet hose in the tank and suck on the outlet, the water will syphon through the canister. that will do the trick
