Woah. That guys an idiot, but how do you strap a monitor lizard to yourself? He must have been scratched to ribbions by the time he reached the end. Even a little one would do some damage, the way it would be thrashing around :S

I don't understand much about legal systems. Can someone explain why it's taken 18 months to get to this point? I sort of understand the delay for more serious charges because they need to compile evidence and stuff but surely this should have been dealt with much sooner than now?

That's something for our authorities to learn. There is no need to automatically kill smuggled animals. We have plenty of quarantine facilities in Australia.
