It looks more like Varanus gouldii to me. Did you happen to notice if the end section of the tail was yellow or not?

dont fall into that trap Blue , apparently the old yellow tail rule does not always apply, depending on locale etc.

Black markings along the side of the head instead of grey = panoptes

I am aware of that. Thanks anyway.

Now I have had a chance to have a proper look at it under magnification (despite being out of focus) I would definitely have to agree with V. panoptes.

Scott, I have not heard of using the eye-stripe in that way. It that peculiar to NE Qld because it does not apply to animals I have seen in the west. Here is pic to illustrate what I mean... Sand Monitor - Varanus gouldii | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
