Can someone tell me how far to put my basking light from my lizard

Just put a light cage on it.

As close as you can without it being able to touch it. Sometimes beardies will try to bite their own reflection in the glass esp. if the bulb has a reflective finish.

the right distance to get the temps right (38-42C) (yeah, the light cage is still a good idea)

depending on what UVB youre using theyre the ones that need a specific distance.
tubes 15-20cms, MVB's 30cms.
