Hi Guys :)

Bought some Panacur today to worm all of my herps - what't the recommended dosage for reptiles??
The back of the bottle says 2mL per 10kg, which is .2mL/1kg etc etc. All of my guys are 400g and under.
Someone else who keeps herps have been told by their ver .2mL/100g. Does this sound ok to everyone?? I don't want to OD them or anything nasty like that....
Thanx in advance :)

Bex

Is it panacur 25,panacur 50 or Panacur 100? The different strengths have different dosage rates.

This is from another list. It was posted by Tim Nias from Ven lab in SA. Panacur is quite safe if used correctly. Panacur comes in several types , Panacur 25 . Panacur 50. Panacur 100. As well as some pastes. The numbers relate to the amount of Fenbendazole (the active ingredient)in Panacur that kills the worm. Panacur 25 has 25mg of Fenbendazole per ml. Panacur 50 has 50mg of Fenbendazole per ml. Panacur 100 etc etc . A good reliable dose rate is 50mg (Fenbendazole) per kg of reptile. Repeat this dose 10 -14 days later then 10 -14 days later again. (3 doses all up. ) NOTE : thats 50 mg NOT 50 ml. So if you have Panacur 25 , then a 1 kg reptile will get 2ml.(50MG) If you have Panacur 50 , then a 1 kg reptile will get 1ml.(50MG) ETC ETC. If this confuses you at all, then do nothing and ask for more help, never administer any drug to any reptile unless you are 100% sure the dose is accurate.

I copied this from a previous thread, hope it will help.

Talk to your vet. Never ever take drug dosage advice from the internet.

Best advice so far, although the rest is fairly acurate, if you are not sure, ask your vet.

Yes, well, as for my vet: they wouldn't tell me what to use in the first place!!
I am just asking what doages everyone else uses.
It is Panacur 25
Thanx :)

The dosage I posted was given to us by our Vet. He also told us that you can't overdose Panacur, unless of course you drown the poor thing in it. Which I know is true as we buggered up the first dosage on an adult beardie and he's alive, well and looking fabulous.
Bex, maybe phone another vet and just ask over the phone to be sure for yourself.

Do you know for sure that thay have worms ?
Or is this just a preventative strike ?

Its true that you can't really overdose panacur it has a safety margin of 5000 or so. If you have Panacur 25 mg/ml with a dose rate of 100 mg/kg the amount administerd should be 0.2 ml per 50 grams of body weight. So an animal that weighs 250 grams should get 1.00 ml (PO = orally)
You can inject Panacur into the prey item of the snake. Once your animal is treated get a faecal and send it to your vet and have it examined. Panacur will only get rid of nematodes.(most common)
Repeat the treatment after two weeks.

That was for a single dose, you can also use a dose of 50 mg/kg but this means you need to treat for three days in a row...

beknluke,

Our vet which is a herp specialist vet in the local region, advised me on panacur 25, which i have now been using for over 2 years. He explained the dosage rates in the exact way that Artie has above. So for panacur 25, the dosage should be 2ml per 1 kg of animal, or 0.2ml per 100g of animal.

So, if your animal weighs 400g, you would administer it 0.8mls of panacur 25.

If this were the case, then why would there be a dosage rate at all? This kind of information is useless without some kind of substantiation to back it up. Should this prove to be no more than hearsay or speculation, it even has the potential to be dangerous.

I don't think statements like this should be made in a thread like this where someone is seeking info. about such a thing as dosage rates for any type of medication or pharmaceuticals, without (which i realise i am now saying for the second time) evidence to support the validity of the statement!

Since Jaffa was found with 'rare worms that are never found in beardies' blah blah, as far I am I am concerned, if they made their way in to her, they could be in my other animals. More than anything, t's 'just to be sure'.
BTW: how much do your vets charge for faecles?? Mine quoted me about $90 (but that was to be incorperated into the cost of the autopsy) and I have also heard of charges as much as $130!! I don't think that I would be able to have them all tested any time soon at that rate!!
Bex :)
