Hey Guys am interested in what you think about this........I went to the Docs the other day,and asked about getting a Epi-pen so as to have on hand ,when Iam out on call outs.I am an asthma sufferer (had severe attacks to be placed in high dependency unit )so I always have my puffer on hand but cant take my nebuliser with me .....anyway I am also allergic to bee venom,so ,was told I should get a pen, as this may be needed if I ever get bitten and due to the places where I go to catch ,its not a 10 minute drive to hospital ,most times a chopper would be needed.Anyway my doctor after listening to me thought yeah good idea and looked into prescribing a pen but had to make a call to the QLD allergy specialist a doctor by the name of DR GRAHAM SOLLEY,he informed my doctor over the phone as I was sitting in the room ,that I wouldnt need a pen, as snake venom ,wont give you an anaphalaxis(spelling) attack.... is this specialist correct in saying that or do you think it needs to be investigated more ?Because I am confused by the comments that I have read about venom and risks and to what I was informed the other day..

Investigate more.......I have been told by numerous medical proffessionals that people can and do have severe anaphalactic reactions to snake venom. It is not that common but it does happen. Cant hurt to find out more can it....better that than to find out the hard way.

For your sake: I hope you never need an epi-pen ><

But research it more and figure all the shtuff out. Better safe then sorry imo.

The specialist is wrong...get in touch with someone who knows what they are talking about.

thought you were talking about bee sting (venom) then it changed to snake venom. sorry but i cant answer your question. but i would suggest that you research and talk to as many people with medical back grounds as possible. after all the epi pen maybe your only chance. good luck and hope that you never need to use an epi pen

Gawd.....people call you to pick up snakes for them?

*bashes head against wall*

Of course you can have anaphylaxis to snake venom after a previous exposure. You can have anaphylaxis to just about anything.

Point your doctor to this report by Brian Fry http://www.venomousreptiles.org/articles/97 and search for more information.

I think the point that your specialist was making was that anaphyaxis is more common in response to antivenom rather than the venom itself due to the fact it is based on a horse blood product. An anaphylactic response to snake venom is possible, but certainly less likely if you don't keep vens or have never been bitten.

As a trained first aider I would probably add that PBS discounts offered on Epi-pens should be extended to include the addition of this item to first aid kits, but now I'm getting political :)

WELL THANKS TO CHIMERA.... will give that to my doctor ,so he can follow that up ,I thought it was strange that as the TOP NOTCH allergy specialist in QLD said what he said BUT I am not a doctor so didnt plause it in anyway, I did tell my doctor that I had heard of cases that had happened and he was in the same thinking too. He is not a specialist in that field so presumed that DR SOLLEY knows what he is on about ,but will give him that link and I know he would be interested in following that up so cheers for that :).......AND as far as TATALINA GOES .....I AM A GOOD CATCHER and come with knowledge and actually have been used as a reference with Qld Parks and Wildlife ....I dont know what your on about when making a comment about what you said .......MY question was aimed at the herpers that know of venom and its reactions in regards to "ANA SHOCK "......and was stating a fact that happend to me a few days ago .......it doesnt AFFECT MY CATCHING SKILLS!.......

Damned useless QLDers! How can an allergy specialist possibly say such a blatantly incorrect thing? If he was selling ice-cream painting signs it wouldn't be so bad, but someone in that position could kill someone by giving out that sort of misinformation. For safety's sake I'd report him.

Oh him!
Now that you mention it, yes. Has David W. got back to you? Just out of interest.

Yes, he got back to me. Unfortunately the protein-specific allergy test he described doesn't actually exist, although I had a good talk to a venom specialist with a lot more knowledge about allergies than a QLD allergy specialist. Because of the nature of the bite and symptoms it's an interesting case study for them and a Victorian allergy specialist will be going through some stuff some time soon.

It has been an interesting time and I've learned a lot more about allergies than I knew before.

Well turnip man let your Vic allergy specialist get in touch and teach this so called top notch QLD specialist the facts ,as he obviously has not been informed and is giving out wrong information...his name is DR GRAHAM SOLLEY and is based in Brisbane............would be interesting to see the outcome ,especially in the cases of us catcher/keepers of vens that may be at a higher risk.......:)

A dude died from a Little whip snake bite a year or two ago.......I thought they weren't considered "dangerously venomous" and the news report mentioned a reaction.
