For more informatoin on Reptile UV than you can poke a stick at http://www.uvguide.co.uk.

This guy measures lamp performance and demostrates the benefits of reflectors etc using a simple UVB intensity meter from solarmeter.

for the record - solar meters are awesome. If you are not on a low budget; buy one. You'll use it quite often, and you're friends will want to pinch it all the time too.

Is it true that dichroic lights provide dangerous amounts of UVC. Because there are several ppl here locally that are suggesting i used them for my Beardie as a cheaper alternative to fluoro's.

I can see how dichroic lights would be cheaper... Isn't it just a type of filter that gives you the light you want?

Seriously, it's not that expensive to get good UV lighting. Especially in a 3ft tank. You can get a 2ft fluoro fitting for next to nothing from eBay. And the tubes only cost $15, which you replace every six months or so. It's not taht much money compared to what you'll be paying for food for your critter, or even the critter itself.

Or if you want to go for a compact fluro, you can get an edison fitting cord for less thatn $20, and http://www.herpshop.com.au/ have the UV lights on special for this month.

I use ceramic fittings for all my fixtures, two tanks have compact exo- terra repti-glo 10, a black-lite ceramic heater and one basking light.

In another tank i use the same except for a 3 foot batton holder with a repti-glo 10 instead of the compact.

Never had problems with compacts other than 1 of them blowing early only ever replaced 1 ceramic heater in under 1 yr also.
