If you dont provide hammocks and fleece as substrate - well your just plain old cruel - ;)

You have to handle them every day for at least half an hour, starting when they are three day old pinkies. If you don't do this you're being cruel. If you start handling the pinkies on the second day you're an irresponsible bastard for disturbing them too early, freaking them and their mother out. If you leave it to the fifth day you're an irresponsible bastard for not socialising them early enough, and your poor mice will never be able to learn to interact with people properly. If you leave it to the fourth day you might get away with it, but you need to apologise to the forum and hang your head in shame for a while.

As stupid as they are, the reptile forums are just as stupid to outsiders... and some of us on the inside :p

some of you are not quite getting the point of this poll im not talking about feeding "your" dog or cat to a snake or pet rat. im talking about generally it would be very hard to kill an animal you have bonded with but why arnt foxies and cats sold frozen at pet shops for scrub pythons or olives, perfect size meal there. its a matter whats taboo in our society.

No you're not. You set up a poll expecting and requesting responses. If the answers weren't to your liking...maybe go throw your Summer John Butler Dreads on another forum? Or thread?

23 people say all animals are equal! Amazing! I would be surprised if any of them would be as comfortable with me eating an endangered snake or whale (or human?) as they are with me eating a dim sim or fish finger. Maybe some bleeding heart who says we shouldn't even harm a mosquito when it tries to bite us, but I doubt you'd find such a person on a snake forum.

my snake has no problem eating veggies like broccoli and Brussel sprouts when he wants to so why shouldn't yours
and if u have a croc then feed it a few possums as long as they they where already dead and died of natural causes
some would say that given the advancement of the human species (in relation to other species and their effect on their surroundings) that human intervention could almost be considered a natural cause.

Not myself personally, just hears it, thought id share it

Well i wont mention how many dogs and cats my rats have eaten ;)

imo the only thing that seperates any animal from another animal is its legal status if whales werent protected more people would eat them. and the idea of eating a human is ridiculous cuz anybody who has thought about it should know the human flesh is inedible:lol: its only things like the eyes and brain your body wont reject.

Yes dogs and cats can be wild and feral but there isnt heaps of them..
Excuse me !?!
I for one beg to differ. I've disposed of far too many feral cats, and I fear I will be for quite some time.

Not all people treat anything equally. Why is a guinea pig or a goldfish seen as a "disposable" pet yet the family mutt gets treated with more respect???
All animals are a life, be it from a guppy to a horse. You can say it but it still won't change how some people are or how some treat living things.
I want to know why we can't feed live rats or mice to snakes when people are still allowed to let their cats roam the countryside and kill all our native fauna!

If all animals are equal, then that sort of changes the problem of feral animals eating/killing native fauna. That would make cats equal to the native critters, therefore theres nothing wrong with them killing natives, or doesnt equals work that way?

In my mind, ability to experience suffering increases with intelligence, so cruelty towards a pig or an octopus is a lot more serious than cruelty against a fish or a bug. That said, I don't think any animal deserves to suffer and that people have a responsibility to avoid causing suffering to any animal, no matter what size, species or level of intelligence. I also think that the value of life is only really proportional to the number of that species in the world, so that the death of one panda is a lot more significant than the death of two thousand cows. We can afford to lose the cows.

Given that rats are pretty smart, I think it's just as important to ensure that they suffer as little as possible when they're killed for food. Insects are less intelligent so I don't think it matters as much, but I still wouldn't be comfortable causing them a protracted, painful death.

In my mind, ability to experience suffering increases with intelligence.

i dissagree with that entirly unless you mean they less intelligent the animal the less understanding it has of the pain. but i personaly believe if you rip off a crickets leg it will feel the same amount of pain a cat would if u did that same thing the cat however would have a greater understanding of the pain. but to scale they would probably fell the same amount of pain. the nerves still fire, sending messages to the brain telling it the animal is wounded.

In my mind, ability to experience suffering increases with intelligence,

I think you connect better with an animal that has a higher intelligence, therefore you feel it suffering more. Its not that it suffers more, its that you can relate more to the suffering.

Animals are not equal. Some animals are meant to be food and others are not, some are endangered and others are not. These things need to be taken into consideration. Rats and mice eat a much more varied diet than a cat or dog so offers my snakes more nutrience, having said that if Barry provided pre killed, frozen puppies I would likely give them a go. Also, I am an (if not the) apex predator on this planet, I do not apologize for that, if it has no k9 teeth I can and probably will eat it, because it is meant to be food for those of us who do have k9 teeth.

That's crap. The flesh is certainly edible. The palms in particular are relished by some.

Could you explain the whole tooth thing? Also what are the nutrients that dogs and cats lack that rodents have?

Could you explain the whole tooth thing?

I think he or she means that they'll eat anything with a typically herbivorous physiology, because they're natural prey animals. He or she has possibly not heard of omnivores, or secondary and tertiary carnivores. :)

Maybe some bleeding heart who says we shouldn't even harm a mosquito when it tries to bite us

Well the number of Buddhists in the world is estimated to be between a quarter - half a billion, and that was exactly what their big dude told them they ought to do. ;)

Hix: If by flesh you mean muscle, sure. But certain parts of the body will very likely make you ill, and there are usually taboos about eating those parts. Livers and brains come to mind. Nobody likes Kuru! :)
