Hi all,

I'm going down to Melbourne next week for the Expo and I'm taking my mum with me and I'm just wondering if people could suggest things to do down there and places to eat.

We'll be there for 3 days and so far we're planning on visiting the Queen Victoria Markets, we've got tickets to see Abba Mania at the Casino and we thought we might take a look at the National Gallery and the Melbourne Zoo but we'll still have time to kill and need some more ideas.

Cheers,

Julie

A great place for dinner, is La Roche on Acland St. St Kilda great food and atmosphere, other things to do...Southern Star observation wheel, Aquarium, Eureka tower, just to name a few....For more stuff go to www.thatsmelbourne.com.au

The Casino has some good eating places

There is also Luna Park in St Kilda if it is still open..

The Werribee zoo is worth a visit as is the aquarium. And for tucker you can't beat HJ's.:)

Werribee zoo is definitely worth visiting & while you are there

Go to the rose garden & mansion it's a gorgeous area :p

Have to give a +1 for these two! Werribee Zoo is amazing, they are slowly moving alot of the animals from Melbourne Zoo to here. It's a bit of a drive, but then your already driving here for the show.

There are some awesome gardens at the Werribee Zoo too, as there is the Werribee Mansion and Rose gardens there, definitely a nice place to visit.

Besides the near beach dining in St Kilda you can also try Lygon Street, there are some awesome restaurants there. I would recommened Papa Gino's as the staff, food and prices are all great there.

Crown is alright, it has a gigantic arcade which can be fun but is expensive... There are also the two art gallaries (Ian Potter and NGV) both are close to each other with one being near the art centre (St. Kilda Road) and the other being in Federation Square....

Southbank also has some lovely dining if you want to sit out and look across the Yarra River and melbourne. There are tens of gardens throughout the city that are lovely to go for a stroll through [havent seen them recently]. You also have the Melbourne Museum which is quiet cheap and interesting, there is also an IMAX cinema in this complex.....

There is a number of places for shopping.... Crown [EXPENSIVE], QV, DFO [Spencer St Station], Melbourne Central, Bourke St Mall... just to name a few of the bigger places, there of course is also the countless other boutique stores placed around the city....

but yeah... as Hoon said... http://thatsmelbourne.com.au

**Eureka Sky Deck is an awesome experience... but also very expensive**

you did the Eureka sky deck! that would be great fun, i wanna go next time im in melb. How much did it cost?

At $16.50 a pop to stand out on a glass platform...

I could think of better ways to spend that $16.50 :p

*take into consideration my fear of heights* lol

Another one for the Aquarium.
As you will be around the Casino anyway.
The Aquarium is just accross the road (well river, walking bridge) from the cassy.
You could lose a whole afternoon in there before you go to Abba Mania.

p.s. may see ya at the expo.

Thanks everyone. That's given me a few more ideas.

We're actually flying down and we won't be hiring a car while we're there so we're going to be sticking close to the city and just getting around via tram and taxi.

I did think about going to Melbourne Zoo but I don't think my mum is all that keen so I might give it a miss this time around. I love Aquariums but been to quite a few now so don't really want to visit another one.

As for the Eureka Sky Deck...there's no way I'd consider doing that. I'm absolutely terrified of standing on anything clear. I have a fear of heights as well, but can manage SOME heights but I would just freeze if I tried standing out on that. So, I'd rather not spend money to look like a complete twit..lol

Note to self....be on the lookout for a scruffy, unshaven bloke in shorts and singlet who's desperately trying to blend in.
