hey i was wondering what light bulbs are everyone going to use when at the end of the year they stop selling incandescent light bulbs (evey day bulbs). the government are stopping the manfacturing of these bulbs to save power and help stop global warming. as these bulbs go what are some other bulbs that are good to use for heating snakes etc. i think this is a pretty seriouse subject.

I was told by a reptile breeder here in SA that specialist heating for herps was exempt from the Gov regulations but I cannot confirm this information.

I'm using ceramics so I'm ok in that area.

heat panels heat tapes ect plenty of heating options that dont burn your snakes

My pet store has heard nothing of it, and they are very reliable

oh ok well there planning on doing it world wide and have them all gone in a couple of years. but in australia its at the end of this year apparently

you will always be able to get them from elec wholesalers etc...

they are only stopping the mass production...

buy in bulk from lighting stores

25 & 40W blue globes are exempt, they will stil be available as will mercury vapour lamps

In our snake enclosures we have never used globes over 25W. In a 4x2x2 enclosure 3-4 of them is enough to maintain a good thermal gradient of about 8-10 degrees and the globes are never hot enough to cause contact burns.

Yep this is alI I use!! Saves power and works really well I just build a small box around the light and have a platform on top (16mm bored) as heat rises it warms the wood up and the snakes bask on top

Works a treat and I have never had to change a bulb since I set this up about 2 years ago:shock:

What makes you say that heat panels can't burn your snake ??? I would trust a bulb anyday

Any heating sources can burn but all should be covered

this has been talked about for around 2 years that i can remember about. ill worry about changing when i can no longer get what im using now. till that time comes i dont think its worth worrying about. if it concerns you that much, start stocking piling globes now so when their no longer available you will have heaps of them

I'm working on heating with pre loved Nuclear Isotopes from our local reactor... I can heat the whole room with little fuss..just need to work out why my snakes keep getting tumors?

thats a great idea jason. ill just duck over to lucas heights and grab a few. if my snakes get tumors ill just cut them off

I use reptile radiators in all my enclosures and find they work a treat, I also use a low wattage light just so i can turn it on via a switch for viewing when i want too
