krav maga is great, my boyfriend does it. not exactly your typical martial arts but i like it

What kind of martial art do you wanto learn and why?

me: Muay Thai, use of all 8 limbs, utilzing the whole body, Physical and Mental tuffness, self discipline (even tho i already am, spent 7 years in Army Cadets) and if i get good after a couple years, i would like to compete, to push myself and my body further, harder, be better than the other guy, be better than the guy who beet me.

to me, defeat is motivation, motivation is believing, believing is winning :)

:)

im a muay thai fella startd just be4 i turnd 13 traind for 3 yrs full on got pretty good at it had 1 fight and got my knee caved in so i havnt traind since wud love to see where i wud be at now if i didnt get a early ending......and i spent 3 months in thailand was a great experince and learnt heaps

thats awomse man! (the part about going to thailand)

sorry ta hear about yea knee, ive had an OP on my right knee, so i dunno how that will go :S

BJJ and GJJ Brazilian/ Gracie Jui Jistu are both great even though they are practically the same thing, not so much about power but more about technque you dont have to worried about getting punched and kicked but more about getting your arm broken or choked, but all you have to do is tap so it is very safe. I enjoyed it for the time i did it then my place shut down :(

9yrs with Go Kan Ryu Karate, I claim the right as the longest ever serving Blue Belt in Victoria   ...in the end I just couldn't be fagged with it. I was in a few State tornaments in some of the open kumite divisions...but........I took up surburban footy instead :D I figure I'm more into team sports :p

Personally I'd go with something a little less "structured" than some of the karate styles. Muay Thai always took my interest, but I never ventured there. Good luck, there are just bucketloads of styles out there ;)

third dan black belt taekwondo and cross trained in brazilian JJ for a few years done it for a total of 16 years. had to stop recently because of the toll it has taken on my body broke two ankles 2 ribs and a colar bone doing it knees are buckled and hips are pretty stuffed aswell

but i wouldnt change any of it for the world had fun met some great people and done alot of damage to others over the years during tournaments :)

That's indeed the other thing Kupper, my sensei had to pull the pin due to the rigors of the sport as well. It sometimes makes you wonder ;) You spend half the time beating yourself up

1st dan black belt in basic self defence karate. been at it 12 years now, i use to really hate it and wanted to quit. but now i'm older and can appreciate it, its not that bad ( + i get to play with some weapons :) ). imo its really good for kids, teaches discipline and respect. its also a great form of exercise. i HATE the comps though, but i guess its part of it so i have to put up with it.
There's no set time it takes to "get good". just depends on how much your into it and how you train in and out of class.
Just dont be one of the guys who goes in just to learn to how to knock heads, because they generally dont get far and wreck the name of the sport. ( not assuming you will be but just a heads up )

in my late teens/20's i boxed for 3 years and was the fittest time of my life as to what to pick for yourself it all depends what you want to get out of it just to defend yourself or some (inner peace) lol im sure you'll find something that fits
Cheers

Thanks for the input (and PM's) I don't have any real reason for wanting to learn one. I just feel like I would like to.
Just not sure what one or if I should learn a few.

i started in karate did that for 12 years and reached as far as i saw that i could ( Black 2nd Dan) i then changed to kicking boxing and with that Muay Thai i trained with some of the worlds best ( Benny the Jet, Murrice The Mean Machine Smith, Stan the Man Longinidis, Jeff Fench, Adam Watt and many more, what are u looking for speed ! the hardest hitters are boxers ! if i was starting a MA now i would take different classes in different MA's - why ! well boxers have the hardest punches its proven- try ju jitsu for locks, throws, submissions, reaserch all MA's then mix that why what you develop that into YOUR OWN style . WHY ! well we are better at some MA's than others and we tend to go in different ways once in never back.

boxing- builds speed and hitt strenght
mauy thai - blunt force and style change
karate- self displane - you can get sick of this fast - katas
ju jitsu- locks throws submissions - i love ju jitsu but wish i had learned this earlier ?
kung fu - wing chun - speed
many more

also try this i am ex army and i instructed here as well Todd Group Australia - Specialist Close Combat Systems

i have other places that may help you but do have the info at work and after a quick look on the net could'nt find what i was looking for

i did boxing and muay thai. one thing i learnt from the years is that there is always some 16 year old that can kick you @rse and he is half your weight lol. to me boxing was the most fun and is good to take the sting out of any aggression you think you have if you spare 3 nights a week the last thing you want to do is go out and fight the other nights.

kenpo jujitsu (sozokan budo), bjj, greco roman wrestling, aikido, arnis, burmese kickboxing, muay thai, boxing competed in MMA

fav styles would be kenpo and brazillian jujitsu as i love the submissions and throws takedowns
the greco is fantastic for just the conditioning it puts you through and the takedowns/controll on the floor
the muay thai i like mostly for the clinch work and elbows/knee's especially on the floor

None of them do sheet if you havent got balls & a heart.
Ive always done boxing, i think any of the non contact or limited contact are a w ank.
You can have the blackest belt in the world, but its no use if you get your nose broken & you start crying like a girly girl.lol

none of the styles i mentioned are ****, non of them are noncontact as a matter of fact the last gym i was at (bjj,greco-roman,muay thai) was all about fighting mma which i did plus being a doormen off and on for 5 yrs (4yrs total)i tell you it works

any one watch the griffin vs ortiz match on go tonight. was bloody good

I did koshin kan karate (mixture of sports and traditional karate and ju jitsu) for about 6 years, reached 1st kue brown belt. Try (if its still open) Australian karate Academy (sensai bob McMohan) on Old cleveland road. Its very discipline but fun, and reasonable fees as well.

Goodluck

Hi mate, dont know why you thought it was directed at you, all im saying is you get a false sense of security if you dont do some form of full contact.
A bit like handling pythons & thinking you must be able to handle vens
