its got the body shape and texture like a bearded dragon aswell as the toes but i could be wrong because the colour looks totally different to one

nice lizard but i have no idea i dont really have lizards

It was given to me yesterday by the miner who found it 1km underground! lol, poor little thing, he has been soaking up some warm rays under a heat lamp all morning. He is in the process of shedding so his feet are a little off colour. Its still sunbaking in a spare set up I have... not quite sure what to do with him actually. Any ideas? I'm about 2 hours away from where he was found, so it isn't really practical to take him to somewhere local to where he was found. (and I'm on the coast, I dont know if he is native to my area)

Its looks like a Jacky lizard and the very dark colour could be due to it being so far underground with out light.,
They are found from the South Qld coast right through to Nth Vic and inland a few 100 km. So if you release it near you, your putting a new bloodline in your area, that cant be a bad thing.

I understand that releasing it could bring foreign diseases ect, but as long as the local bloodline isn't rare, distinct, or otherwise special, wouldn't a 'new lizard' strengthen the local bloodline?

I'm not condoning, just asking.

It is a bad thing, if you can't release it where it was found don't release it at all.

Thats it, get the miner to release it back on site..
Or hand it over to a wildlife group like WIRES.

A lot of the bigger (or less dodgey) mines have
someone on site who can deal with wildlife issues.

yes release it where it was found, they are alos found on the central coast but as other stated its not good for the population around your area

You are all saying "its bad", but nobody is saying why. Anyone care to elaborate?

if you release the animal into another area you have a possility of of the animal carring a disease and could wipe out the population in your area, the areas have been separated for thousands of years, the coast has different environmental conditions to mine areas. so posily the animals have evoled to different condions, the new blood would possibly do more damage than good. this is what i was told by a ranger when a neibour found a bearded near the pits and brought it home to me when I asked him where to release it he told me that. btw that was 4 years ago

Apart from the whole disease issue, you are also disrupting local gene pools. Even if the animal looks exactly the same as the local population it is likely somewhat different. Plus healthy populations don't need human intervention to 'strengthen' their bloodlines.

On top of this you are also placing the local system out of balance and more then likely putting the animal into an existing territory.

Id say you should give it to Wires so that the lizard gets proper special care if it has any injuries ect.. and wires can take it to where it was found.. Dont keep it as it is illegal and you could get into a lot of trouble unless you get a permit..

Thanks everyone. I wont be releasing it into my local area, I will look into getting a permit for him on Monday. If that isn't a possibility I will give WIRES a call.
