Thanks Ben we find lots of snakes here as we have bush behind us at the end of our dead end street and behind the houses across the rd we have caught a few inside our house like this one was found!

I have actually found one like this in currumbin on the gold coast, never seen an others similar to it though, nice find BTW

Not sure I have ever heard of a 'caramel' carpet before... but this one does look pretty normal to me. They're usually nicer colours when young as well (from previous experience).

There is a chance that it has been bred from captive snakes - but personally (and only from seeing very few wild Brisbane carpets) they all tend to be that orangey brown colour (excuse the colourblind description).

That's a pretty typical young coastal, very pretty aren't they? I found a wild one a few weeks ago with paybe 2% black pigment on it, about a yearling, the "caramel" usually get more ordinary with age, depending on the individual, while some other colours look the most stunning as adults.

All of the other hatchies and juvi's we have seen here have been of the dark brown colour none have ever been this light before so I thought it was worthy of posting pics of this little one.

Sorry, my comment may have sounded harsh... I meant that this is a very nice specimen :)

I do believe that there are a fair few young carpets that exhibit those nice colours - maybe not always located near you though.

I guess more typically you do see the darker brown ones - that's for sure.

I wouldn't mind a coastal like that, but i think they would be a bit big for my first snake.

Here in SA the only snakes that have wandered into my house are king browns.Big king browns, and most of the time they are heaps cranky. Not a snake i like cos they usually don't runaway. The sleepy lizard in our shed loves cat biscuits tho.

i live in south brisbane and we get heaps of coastal carpets but always the darker colours, never seen one like that. i really like him =]

I live in Brisbane also. Usually the coastals I found around my house are different in colouration, this is definitely a very caramel-ish colour. If you look at the two wild coastals in my album there is a big difference. Having said that, I came across a coastal almost identical to this one crossing the road in Murrarie about a month ago. It may have had even less black and it was about six feet or so in length.
