New Zealand is not much of a shot when it comes to snakes (lol) but some of their geckos are just fantastic. These green species are not only beautiful but they are also diurnal.

HOLY MOLY!!!!

I can see why a GTP keeper like yourself would have fallen in love instantly lol.

They look so cool!!!

wow they are gorgeous! we should be aloud nz reps at least =[ its practically australia...

Yeah, they would go well with my native GTPs - the same colours. But I would have to keep them in the fridge. lol

Sounds like a wine fridge conversion to me lol.

wow...it almost looks like a cross between a gecko and a small dragon. do their tails drop? looks to have claws too

They are arboreal, using their prehensile tails and claws. I am not sure if their tails drop.

Believe it or not the northland greens and the mid eastern north coastal ones do not need any out of the norm cooling. I have keep and breed both of these forms as a kid. In Gisborne we experience relatively waarm weather a good part of the season and only a seldom frost in some winters. In cairns though waterrat, you are probably right and you would have to think that they would needed to be keep indoors in the summer at the very least.
I both hate and love these threads on the NZ green gecko's. On one hand I would give up snakes in a heart beat to keep these but knowing it isn't going to happen here legally any time soon, just teases me.
By the way cobber, I couldn't find reference on goggle earth for the spot over there I mentioned.

Cheers Dave

Hi Dave, I didn't find the spot either - the Maori names of places drove me nuts!!!!!

DedaCricket, the geckos are protected fauna in NZ.

If the proposed joining of Aus & Nz goes ahead, does that make them native?

It's a good theory, but what's more likely to happen would be like Tasmania.
Are NZ and Aus finally just going to become one nation? There's so many flitting back and forth it's pointless to keep the proverbial border up in my opinion. I'd be grateful to just say 'I'm an Australasian' rather than expat Kiwi, I don't really feel like either to be perfectly honest; they're both home to me, and they both have their fantastic points.

I just rang my dad and now have the exact spot for you ( I had the wrong name )
I will PM you with it or if you like could phone ?

How many types of lizards/geckos are there ?
Great shot by the way i love the green

According to the latest research, there are some 40 NZ endemic species of geckos in 7 genera and 50 or so species of skinks divided among 9 genera.

Damn...another animal that I can't have.

If I didn't know better, WR, I'd say you had a distinct sadistic bent....teasing us with the forbidden. tsk. tsk. ;)

Oh, wow! What a gecko. Where did you take that picture, Michael?

In NZ :D

Are they rare?

I am by no means an expert on NZ geckos, from what I have been able to find out, many of the species' populations have been decimated by rats, many have extremely small and isolated distribution ranges, others are common. The diurnal green species are incredibly hard to find.

i used to keep nz geckos when i was younger some of them are very beautiful...of course that was before i found out you were not allowed to keep some of them lol
