I recieved a call from another snake catcher in my area this morning in regards to a young EB which had been attacked by a dog. Look at options of euthanasia i was given the option to view the snake and offer my opinion.

The snake is severely damaged as the pictures show. Bitten off above the cloaca. Was a shame to such a beautiful lil critter.

Thanks to Christian for giving me the oppertunity to look at the snake and offer my opinion and also letting me get shots of it.

Bloody hell, i would have splattered its head with the first available blunt object after seeing the damage was anterior to the vent. Cant feel good having your **** cut off....

Although effective. under law the snake must be euthanased in a humane manner which in this case smashing the head could work, preservance of rest of body would be beneficial.... Therefore not wanting head destroyed :D

How come it's illegal for a human to kill a snake, but not a dog?

Nobody said either way. The law will state that all animals should be euthanised humanely. Poggle was talking about a snake, not a dog. You shouldn't splatter a dog's head any more than that poor snake, even if you think you are trying to do it a favour.

You dont get much more humane than instant destruction of the brain. Its the recommended form of euthanasia when a vet isnt available. Crushing the head isnt as nice for the person doing the crushing but its the nest for the snake. Do some reading, makes me cringe to think your putting these in the freezer live......

humane [hjuːˈmeɪn] adj 1. characterized by kindness, mercy, sympathy, etc.
2. inflicting as little pain as possible a humane killing
3. civilizing or liberal (esp in the phrases humane studies, humane education) [variant of human]
humanely adv

Read. Destruction of the brain causes the least pain, far better than an a vet using the snake like a pin cushion because he has no idea where the heart is.

Crushing the brain is a humane method, possibly the most humane. You won't find any law that disallows that.

Snake relocators should have some knowledge about euthanasia. Aren't they taught about freezing in the course they have to do to get their licence? If not, then there is something missing.

If you know anything about a body put in the freezer to die you will know its anything but humane.

I'm trying to be as inoffensive as possible Poggle but mate, you really need to do some reading if your going to continue doing relocations. Ive whacked more than my fair share of Elapids and Pythons over the years and i can tell you with certainty that you will find no surer or humane way to kill a snake than crushing its head.

Putting in freezer is for when snake may be required for further examination. I have a good vet who does all euthanasia. If we would once again like to turn this in to a he should do this or that thread by all means go for it again :)

I'm pretty sure he was asking why it isn't illegal for a dog to kill a snake, it was poorly worded though :p

I agree with you dude. I have had to whack some aswell... I was stating in this case it would benefit from vet or put in freezer once euthanaised. I apologise for wording not coming out correct and for me not reading it correcting. I thought you meant just take to it... So yeah my bad. I just think it would be a speciman to not destroy completely.

Oh, ok then... Taking a dying animal to the vet, is subjecting it to unnecessary pain and torture, not to mention robbing the ecosystem of valuable nutrient. If your friend has trouble with putting a snake out with a hammer to the head asap when needed, then their compassion is impotent.
