Hey guys, out of curiousity, how much would you pay for a mac? I'm beginning to think I got ripped off when it came to the price of my spotted python, judging by prices on here that I've seen from others and prices at other reptile/pet stores that I've been into (I'm in SA, so not many reptile ones.) I bought mine from a reptile store where they have the breeding pair on display, breed them instore, and have the hatchlings on display, so not from a private breeder.
Same goes for the lizards and dragons.
Anyway, How much would YOU pay for a spotted hatchling (from private breeder or in a petshop)?
Cheers

I got a spotted for my first snake and stupidly i went to a pet shop (which i wouldn't do these days) and paid $300 for it. 6mnths old, nowadays i would probably buy a hatchling from a breeder for 150 - 200$$ (not that i plan to)

that depends on how bad i wanted it. the thing about prices is its only worth what someone is WILLING to pay for it, if your not willing then the next person might be. Pet stores have overheads to pay and will charge more, not only that they themselves may have been charged top dollar by the breeder. All I can say is next purchase take what you have learned from this one to help with your decision.
What I've learnt from my purchases is if it doesn't come with a feeding record I don't want to know about it. If I can't come back and look at the animal or spend some time handling the animal I don't want to know about it. If I can't see it (from a local breeder) I don't want to know it. It's just what we all learn

We sell our spotted hatchies/juvies for $120, But as stated above stores have a lot of overheads to meet so they have to be dearer.

@reptilerookie, Yes I stupidly paid around that price aswell, though this place only sells reptiles, so I expected it to be cheaper, but no, it was more expensive than a normal petshop!

@manda, oh I've definitely learned. I went back there just two days ago to buy some stuff and their hatchlings were down to around $180. I almost paid double that but I can't really do much about it now.

I'm not unhappy with my snake at all, I've just realized that I was probably naive about the price because it is my first snake. Oh well.

@beeman, thats true, but still, now that I see what others are paying and how much the prices keep going down then fluctuating again... I'm just annoyed at myself mostly haha.

Todays prices on spotteds id expect to pay anywhere between $80-$150 for a hatchling from a private breeder.

My girl was $245 as a hatchie. She's 3+ now. And I got my blonde boy for $200 + freight.
For a normal spotted I'd probably pay about $100-$150.

If I knew of any private breeders in Adelaide I would've definitely checked there first, but I was new to the whole purchasing thing, as I've never owned one for myself, only taken care of my cousins snakes. Next herp I'm defnitely looking around!

Hey MChaz.I'm in sa as well and dwn here we don't seem to have a lot of choices.I have been to the shop at christies beach and the shop run by the two 'shonky' people....hubby and wife team.At the second place we paid 150 for our first bredli and when we went back two weeks later to get another one it was double the price, and the female was the cheaper one.SA is a very pricey state to love reptiles in.

There are a few people on the forum who come from SA and have hatchlings for sale.im sure if you looked around next time you will find a better price from a local breeder.currently i am waiting to hear back from two here in SA.Keep the faith. And so long as you love your snake does price really matter? Both my two snakes have come from Victor Harbor wet and wild.Nice store, always have hatchys in and never over 200.Not usually a big choice but both my snakes are gems.

Hey kaotikjezta a quick ? for you.How hard are the water dragons to keep? What are they like as pets?

Hey Sookie, your right, my spotted was worth every cent :) and yes SA does seem to be a very expensive state to keep reptiles in! Before I buy another, I will make sure I look around carefully and will most probably come on here and suss out some private breeders. Although its a fair drive for me, I'll keep Victor Harbour in mind! Cheers

I think I paid $200/$220 for my spotted but that was 3/4 yrs ago

The breeder I got mine from commented on how much the price has dropped in the last five years. He sells hatchies for $100 and my yearling was $150.

Im getting my blonde spotted on tuesday and she cost $170 I think it was. Very excited:)
