As one of the organizers of this event, I have started this thread to give people a ‘post expo’ update.

Firstly to all the breeders, exhibitors and fellow herpers who attended the expo, we’d like to say a big thank you !

Secondly, the door prize of a pair of het albino childrens pythons was won by a 10 year old boy from the central coast. They will be claimed by his father. We are pleased that a young enthusiast won the prize as they are the future of our hobby.

To the person who started a thread describing the event as ‘slight let down’, all I can say is that we must be living on different planets. The expo was a smashing success with a great turn out of experienced herpers and LOTS of newbies. I believe that very few people who attended would disagree (except maybe the two boys who stole snakes and then got caught) To all the other people who made positive comments, we appreciate your support.

I don’t want to get too long winded but more generally, I would like to address a few of the comments that were made.

1. As far as ‘making a killing’ is concerned, I can tell you that if I wanted to get rich, I would not be organising a reptile expo. After all the expenses including venue hire, insurance, advertising, table and partition hire, signage and a dozen other things that need to be purchased or hired, there is precious little left to call ‘profit’. I am not even mentioning the huge amount of time and organization required to tie everything together.
We kept breeder booth prices to an absolute minimum. In fact, of the $150 we charged each breeder for a table, we had to pay $74 for public liability insurance – and that was the smallest part of the total insurance cost. You do the math and you can clearly see that we are not in it for the money. We are doing it for the hobby in Australia which in my opinion desperately needs a boost and a bit of new direction. If someone thinks they can do it better, please get out of your computer chair and show me some results.

2. Someone commented that it would be nice to ‘mix things up’. I totally agree but the reality is that reptile expos in NSW are controlled by National Parks and approvals require that breeders selling animals and retailers must be separated. This is to avoid the ‘commercialisation of reptiles by association’ because as we all know, it is not legal to commercially deal in reptiles in NSW. Hopefully that is a temporary situation, soon to change.

3. Someone commented that there wasn’t enough space around the breeder’s tables. Yes, that is a fair comment
but we were not expecting (hoping but not expecting) such huge numbers of people. We left a metre between each table but that was not enough. We will address that for next time. YES… there will be another Castle Hill Reptile Expo next year so please spread the word.

4. A few people commented that the expo was ‘too early’
as many hatchies were not yet established or had not even hatched yet. I do agree with you to an extent but we didn’t have a lot of options to play with. The venue is very difficult to get and we also didn’t want to clash with any other expos. We will look at making it a little later in the season next year. We can never make everyone happy but we’ll try our best :D

If you have read this far, then I would like to thank you for your time.……. Adrian Hemens 14/02/2011

Awesome news that it will be back on next year.

Also did people really try and steal some reptiles, what a low act.

Wow that boy who won the het Childreni must be hitting the roof with excitement

I wonder if he realises how big a prize it is. Lucky little fella.

Adrian thanks very much for organising it. You and Daniel looked pretty stressed on Saturday and Sunday but it turned out to be a pretty big success from what I saw. Already looking forward to next year :)

All in all and all things considered the day could not be seen as anything other than a success,I don't know how anyone could think otherwise.Kudos to the organisers.

The timing of the expo is the only thing that could be considered a problem,in that a lot of hatchies aren't quite ready to go as yet.The other thing and to my mind it's the most important thing is that you are taking way way too much of a gamble on the weather at this time of the year.Had it been going to be one of our really hot days that we often see at this time of the year then the outcome could of been very different as breeders wouldn't of turned up knowing their animals would be at risk because of that heat.

in a way i feel bad that you felt the need to come and post this, i think you guys did a great job and i am looking forward to next yr already!
having said that i think posting this thread is a great way to show that you are paying attention to what others have said after the show and are looking into making some changes to try and appease other people!
A+ over all!

I agree the expo was a HUGE success!

Like I said in another thread...
I had a GREAT day & I thank both You Adrian & Daniel for creating yet another great expo for us all to attend.

Most of the day the show was totally packed out!
Infact I didnt get a chance to sit down or have a proper look around all day (although I managed to have a quick sqwiz)

I had planned not to but anything that day as I am rather content & have enough for the time being,. but couldnt help myself & splurged on a pair of GTP................................................earings :) ...lol I LOVE em!

Was great to talk to soooooo many people that share such interest in this hobby.
I bet I spoke to many of you & didnt even realise!

Thanks again guys.
& thanks for offering Breeders tables at reasonable prices.
If same applies for next year ,. put us down for 2 again :)

I had a great time & am really looking forward to the next expo.
As for the few complainers ,. ah well cant please everyone.

Also I am disappointed to hear there were 2 boys trying to nick of with some snakes!!!
surprised I didnt hear / see any of this happen - So good to hear they were caught!

Albino childreni? Or do you mean Albino maccies?

I thought it was a great day, entry price and table price was right and affordable. We are awfully lucky to have any expo's and I for one am very grateful that we do. Yes the crowd became a bit hectic as the day went on and most tables were difficult to access but this in a large part is unavoidable and really is promising for those of us with animals to sell. I for one hope the organisers did make a decent profit because I want to see these expo's for many years to come

congrats to the Coastie who won the lucky door prize!!!! Enjoy....... I had a great time.... I would love to have known earlier about needing volunteers as I would def have been in that !!!! But great show anyways

I think the timing was fine, as there were plenty of pythons, geckoes and beardies for sale to satisfy most buyers. The place was packed for the hours I was there and the two stores there were bustling with customers, hence my 'Making a killing' comment. Wasn't meant to be a nasty comment, my previous posts were simply observations made on the day, under the only thread regarding the show running at the time. For what it's worth i was involved to varying degrees in the 3 Macarthur expos that also copped mixed reviews, each time the profits pretty much funded the next years expo and that's it. Successful day for the hobby and will more than likely attend next years one also.

As an organiser of the MacHerps expo we had that problem every year, unfortunately we didn't catch most of them.

Dirty scum bags

It`s sad that reptile enthusiasts steal from other reptile enthusiasts. You can see why most people dont take the new morphs or best animals to events

It would be sad if expo organisers had to factor in security with all the other planning...

From memory we encouraged either rear opening displays for sale animals, so only the seller had immediate access OR have a sheet of perspex covering all the sale animals, so obvious effort had to be made to take an animals container from the table, even to inspect thoroughly. I think Henry Cook was first to display his sale animals in the latter format at the Macarthur expos. Maybe sellers might want to consider those ideas in the future?

yeah spaces between stands which has been addressed !

great crowd turn out !!!

i hope the wild expo crew know how much they will be missed by me now we have had this show and how competition does it !!

after talking with the other sellers and major industry breeders and sellers they were suprised by the amount of people through the door !!

with some stand owners saying they wished they had bigger stands !!

i understand one breeder lost some ant childreni - stolen !! maybe a receipt of purchase should be checked when leaving like the sydney gun shows
i remember catching one at last years wild expo - and i didnt work there !!!

thanks for a great day !!!

I had a great day.... thanks for organising and thanks for the Post-Expo thread.

Yeah or they just didn't want to part with the $150. Some of the breeders were sort of asking for trouble though I think. There were quite a few people who just had the chinese style containers sitting in the open. With the number of people around each table I'm surprised there were only two. Like someone already said it's unfortunate that this happens somewhere where it should be people sharing their passion for the hobby
