Koubee - how old is your Beardie? Is that why you took it to the vet because it was listless? Is there another reptile vet that somebody can suggest to help her. I am in qld so can't help

hey mate take her to the karingal hospital vet see Shane Simpson hes great his great with reptile he knows his stuff with reptiles

Thanks guys, i'm feeling a little more hopeful for the little guy now.
Sorry to freak you out Koubee - just going on what my vet told me,(she is not a rep vet though) and mine was an injury. I feel for you, there is nothing worse than not knowing what to do for them.

The beardie is 9mths old and very undersized, he was the runt of his litter, i know this because he is one of my hatchlings.
Attempted your suggestion Planks but no good, Shane is away for 2 weeks.
He has put on a little weight since being assist fed but he is not picking up within himself, still just lays there in the same spot. We are keeping the heat up to him and checking him regually . Fingers crossed he pulls through.
I'm going to give the Baytril a couple more days and see if there is any improvement otherwise i'll take him to Altona or Warrenwood Vets, both good herp vets.
Thanks all for your advice, especially Mystery.

Koubee - My understanding is that Baytril can be quite painful for the animal but it definately DOES work...

...my Vet uses Fortrum, and apparently it is a more broad spectrum anitbiotice and is less painful...and no, you don't need to go to a Chemist or Hospital. My Vet gave me my Fortrum and syringes to treat an RI...

The problem lies not in what drug we use but the high incidence of multi resistant Pseudomonas and Aeromonas bacterial infections as predominant flora in reptiles.. This means that many of these bacterial organisms will not respond willy nilly to any drug we throw at them. This is why a culture first is very important. Unfortunately, many of the drugs to which we get positive results are not common dog/cat drugs so will not be offered. This means that common drugs like baytril are used relentlessly and eventually will be less effective as resistance increases. Drugs like Tazobactin and Fortum are considered "specialist" drugs by most vets and will have to be specially ordered. Even some chemists/hospital pharmacies do not stock them routinely.

Thanks Dan - you are a great help! If it hadn't have been for you my Beardie would never have survived. She is now very happy and healthy with all four legs, just lost a couple of toes off her back legs. The response to the Fortum was basically overnight.

Koubee how is your little guy doing??

Thanks for that Mystery & GeckoDan. He is looking heaps better and is starting to hunt by himself now, thankfully.
He is still doing rather runny, smelly poops but other than that he is on the mend.
He is back to the vet tomorrow so i'll be sure to let you know what she says.
We ended up putting woodies, mealies and crix into a cup and attacking them with the barmix, so he was getting the goodness from the insects.
I'll post some pics of him soon.

Hello

Hello,

Sorry your beardie is sick!
Baytril usually works pretty well. It is good for infections, especially respiratory infections.
Fortaz & Amikacin are decent antibiotics that work on bacterial or viral infections.
Did they do a culture smear to determine exactly what type of bacteria you are dealing with? That would help immensely so you can specifically treat instead of guessing.
The dosage is good however, at .05. While he is on the baytril, keep him a little warmer at night to help boost his immune system & keep his metabolism increased so he can metabolize the meds better. Either use a ceramic heat emitter, or a heat pad on low with a towel in between your boy & the heat pad.
Also, daily, keep him very hydrated with at least 2-3 cc's or ml's of water & pedialyte mixture to help him as well.
I hope he gets to feeling better soon.

Tracie
