Didn't physically touch it. Doing the arm waving, making loud noise thing, it turned, ran at him, over him, dropped off the other side, straight over the 8 lane highway, didn't get hit, into the bush...
 
Poor goana mabe had impression that your friend is extremely hangry aboriginal man. Sexreturn.
 
Sounds like the animal had a panic attack. I'm very surprised that it didn't avoid its tormentor and go for the closest bit of bush (mabye that was outside the monitors territory). I have never come across that behavior but then I try and not disturb the animals. All goannas I've met (apart from the two mentioned above) have either ignored me or moved away from me, perhaps herding goannas should be done quietly, but sometimes they just won't move.

This incident does re-enforce my earlier comment - leave them alone.
